In a nutshell... Your name comes up you go. You can volunteer for deployments but that is hit and miss. Deployment criteria for the Army is changing. Not sure about the Air Force/Guard.

Im sorry to inform you that Guardsmen never know when they will be deployed so prepare yourself for a possible deployment up to a year

He might be in the College First program, which can prevent him from being deployed for 2 years if he is in school.

I HAVE HEARD FROM MY COMMANDER THAT ALL THE ARNG UNITS ARE TYPICALLY ON 2-YEAR ROTATIONS
FOR DEPLOYMENT IF NEEDED.THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS THOUGH,SUCH AS MEDICAL OR IN SCHOOL.BUT FOR SCHOOL (LIKE RECLASSING) ONCE YOU FINISH YOU USUALLY GET ATTACHED TO YOUR UNIT WHEN COMPLETED
I WAS ATTACHED TO MY PREVIOUS UNIT JUST AS THEY WERE GETTING BACK FROM IRAQ.THERE WAS ALOT OF THEM WHO HAD NOT PASSED THERE PT TEST AND OTHER REASONS THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN A NON-DEPLOYABLE STATUS...BUT THEY WENT ANYWAY THE ARMY NEEDS BODIES TO SEND SO IF YOU CAN GO YOU
MOST LIKELY WILL.

As off right now not all of them but there is a very high need of people to support the troops in Afghanistan or irak or could be anywhere, my recruiter told me!! you are going to be an mp you are going to be deploy probably by mid next year!!.

you have to complete the bct and do the ait that could happen after you graduate from bct!!!it depends of the army!!!its a big organization!!!!

good luck support him !!!!he is going to need it

Not necessarily. With the optempo today there is a good chace that you will be deployed somewhere. I've heard that the deployment lengths are changing for the Air Guard, but I can't verify that. Odds of coming back? Nobody can say for sure.

Patrick think long and hard about your decision to join. If your name comes up to deploy, you will deploy for as long as they need you to.

Best of luck to you!

wait a minute, your unit needs to come up in the Gaurd, correct? I want to deploy, but I am assigned to a unit that isn't liekly to get activated for deployment for at least another year and a half. I planned to look around and volunteer after AIT. are you all telling me that an individual name can be called to duty overseas and assigned any unit? that does not seem right and certainly goes against all the info I have been given so far.
