I am in 1-18th Cav in the California National Guard. Almost everyone that is my emmediate superior is new to the unit as well. I'm not sure what SSI we are supposed to wear.

Is it this one...

For the 40th Infantry Division

Or is it this one...

For the 40th Infantry Brigade Combat Team

Anyone have the answer to this? No one seems to know for sure. Thank you...

If the pictures on this website are current, you'll be wanting the 40th ID SSI.

I am pretty sure you are supposed to wear the 40th IBCT patch. That is what most of the 18th cav were wearing when we went to san diego for the fires. I also had a few guys in my reclass from 18th cav who wore the 40 ibct patch.

additionally if you look up 40 ibct you will see that 18th cav is under 40 IBCT not 40th ID.

Im sure the CoC knows, but I havent been concerned enough to bother them with it. Half my Company doesnt even have nametapes yet for instance.

Just found out recently though that we are supposed to wear the 40th IBCT patch. Im just too used to the active Army. I didnt want to get all effed up by wearing the wrong patch, but no one seems to care anyway.

Well welcome to the Guard. some units are like that, most of units in my brigade have pretty high standards uniform-wise, especially my bat. We go full battle-rattle for training, where others do not.(IVA,eyepro, elbow, kneepads, ach, throat protector, nad plate, gas mask) Our CSM even put out what is placed on IVA and where it is placed, complete with pictures. Some joes were dangling their m4s around instead of the low ready so the CSM said to take the slings off.

Yeah, dont get me wrong, my unit is pretty squared away with how they do things usually. We are being rebuilt from the ground up it seems and we are pretty much flappin in the wind with uniforms because there is a huge influx of new dudes. Our supply system just hasnt caught up yet. The training is the real kicker, and we do some pretty challenging training. I'm in just as good shape as I was in the Active Army and I was certainly challenged the last drill we had (we were in the field at Camp Pendleton).

I don't know SGT since I miss last drill the patch might have been change. But when I was pick up my 1SG to join the unit as well as the other three infantry soldiers he pinned the 40th ID patch on us. During the fire we were all wearing the 40th ID patch.

During the fires I was the PSD for the Colonel over the whole OP. We went out with handfuls of 40IBCT patches to give out to all of you "out of uniform" soldeirs who came in with the old 40th ID patches.

Time has passed for your units to have put in the correct patch. Get with your 1SG or CO and get the right one on. I seriously doubt anyone in CA-ARNG is wearing the 40th ID anymore, maybe a few here and there.

1-18, you guys were awesome during the fires. Glad to have worked with you. You are wearing the 40th IBCT.

I am attached to the 81st brigade right now in Iraq, but am from the 184th. We are being forced to wear their stupid toucan sam patch here, even though we aren't even under their command where we are at. I was told that the 40th IBCT was no more as of a month or so ago. Any truth to this, was the brigade redesignated as the 76th or something liek that? I know it cannot be the 76th because that is who we relived here, so i am just trying to see if anyone back home in California has heard about this.

The 40th IBCT became the 79th IBCT, part of 40th ID as of a month ago (about). We should get a new patch too I think.

I am with HHC, 79th IBCT out of San Diego.

Thanks oldervet, i appreciate the info. That kind of sucks about getting a new patch, I do like the patch we have now. So the brigade is pretty much the same, just a different name and patch.

To all you confused 79th IBCT members,
The former 40th Armored BDE patch that has up to now been worn by the 40th IBCT and now 79th IBCT is not authorized nor has it ever been authorized for the 40th/79th IBCT by the U.S. Army Institute of Heraldry. Furthermore, several units within the brigade have deployed OCONUS and there has been numerous issues concerning which Former Wartime Service Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (FWTS-SSI), or combat patch soldiers within these units should wear. One battalion CSM INCORRECTLY directed soldiers to wear the unauthorized patch as their FWTS-SSI which only added to the confusion, sowed resentment, and called into question the credibility of his leadership. The soldiers affected by this incorrect directive should look at AR 670-1, appendix F, paragraph c which basically says that units not authorized a patch in their own right should wear the patch of the lowest level higher headquarters in theater that is authorized an SSI as their FWTS-SSI. The 79th/40th IBCT is not currently authorized an SSI as it is not task organized to the 40th ID. Under the new modular task organization the 40th ID is a separate headquarters and does not have the 79th/40th IBCT within it's force structure. Hopefully the 79th IBCT will gain approval soon on a new patch. Hope this helps.

Thanks, but you really shouldnt throw out blame so quickly to soldiers. I was with the IBCT Dep CDR during the fires of 2007 and he was handing out the lightning bolt 40th IBCT patch to everyone. When your command tells you to wear a patch, you wear the patch. Let the birds and stars sort out the mess, they will let us know, until then we wear what we were ordered to wear. Its not that big a deal.

Hey Oldervet,
Maybe I was a little harsh on the leadership. But then again, the fact that we soldiers are asking each other this question on line pretty much speaks for itself. Hey, like you say, I guess the best thing to do until the stars and the birds sort it out is to just go with the flow.
