I am applying for the MD Air National Guard and I will be meeting my recruiter Friday. I was wondering if some people could look over my questions and maybe answer some of them. Also if you have anything I should ask please post it! My background is IT/Mainly Cisco/VMware networking.
College/GI Bill Pay for college? 50% How much a year towards a masters? What if I want to go to a school out of state? When can i start using the GI bill for college? Am I eligible for the student loans payback? Boot/Tech When do I leave for boot/tech? Any other training after tech? Will I get any help moving before I leave for bootcamp/tech school? MISC Is there a sign on bonus for my career field? If so is there a longer commitment? How long do I need to put in for retirement? Am I eligible for the Thrift Savings Plan? How many years till retirement? When am I allowed to use my ID card (all the time or only when im activated)? Eligible for BAQ/BAH? Can I do military hops? Thanks!! |

Most of these questions are specific and you need to ask the recruiter. However, some are general and I can help. There are exceptions, but at present, you need 20 years for retirement. Yes you are eligible for the Thrift Savings Plan. In the military, you do not pay into your retirement like a 401k or 403b account. So you serve 20 years and then get the retirement based on 50% (or higher) of your highest three years pay. The TSP is in addition to retirement. It does not affect your standard military retirement. Under current regulations, reservists and their dependents can use full exchange and commissary privileges even when not on active duty. You are eligible for BAH when you go to training as long as you have a dependent. |
