Hello. Im active duty air force. I have a 20 year old brother in the army guard. He has been missing duty days but he tells me its not a big deal. He says that its more relaxed than what Im used to. He mentioned something about a "U" and wont talk about it or anything related to the problem. I wanted to know how a problem like this is handled in the guard. If I was missing duty days I would be AWOL... I just dont want him to get a dishonorable discharge. Thanks for reading.

If he is getting U's he is counted as Awol and will get a dishonorable discharge most likely especialy if there is a deployment comming up/

9 u's in a 12 month period and he will be discharged, if he got a bonus he will have to pay it all back, and if he has any equipment and does not return it he will be charged for it. Just because he does not go back does not mean he will not be paying because they will take it out of his tax return until it is paid off.

If he has the attitude of not having to show up for drill...he needs to get out. What will happen if a national emergency like Katrina happens and his unit is called up? He'll be behind his fellow soldiers in his duties. You didn't say what MOS he is and if his skills aren't kept up, he'll be hurting the unit more than himself.

This is a NO WIN situation. Like mentioned, after the 9 U's (unsatisfactories)they can discharge him (even dishonorably), (and prior to all that) forfeit his military pay, bust him down in rank, & recoupe bounuses & other incentives by taking income tax returns for several years, etc. If he has a 1SG like mine that "does not play around" & has "zero tolerance" for AWOL's...then the unit notifies all law enforcement in the area to be on the lookout & they will bring the soldier in...its just a matter of time. Its much easier just going to the drills & doing what has to be done. Also, perhaps try to get to the "source" of the problem...as there may be some deep underlying issues that may need to be resolved. Best of luck.
