I've been recently considering joining the NG, and have been interested in the SF field. I know that me being in CA, that would be under the 19th SFG (according to this site: http://www.americasarmy.com/army/ng_sf.php), but the links on the page aren't working for me. I also cannot find any concrete (official) source online that lists ALL (no matter how small) NG SF units. Specifically, I'm located in San Diego, CA.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
EDIT: If SF isn't a possibility due to my location, does anyone know of any Airborne/LRS (or anything of the sort - that's not just regular infantry) that's somewhat close to San Diego? All the units I've seen here (in SD, and the neighboring areas El Cajon, Escondido, etc.) are just Infantry (or Cav). Could I be missing something? Or am I just out of luck?
RI National Guard has a SF unit that soldiers drive from up and down the eastern US to come to drill. We have a very strong unit here. Look them up on our state sight RI ARMY National Guard here is the unit link 19th Special Forces/Company A, 2nd Battalion or feel free to call me anytime.
CalCadet144 and Peale1:---Guys, to paraphrase Hamlet; "Get thee to a Recruiteree"...
They have the info you need and can give you answers. {That's why they get paid.}.
CalCadet144; at first I was hinky about mentioning this on the internet-but alas Google has several listings. Hint: type in Special Forces California National Guard. You'll need to get on the I-5 and go north about a two hour drive. But before you get visions of Green berets circling above your head...You have to go to Basic, then Infantry, then Jump School. You also need a 2nd language, and be able to swim well. They also like college degrees.
As per the age restrictions-check with an Army Guard Recruiter at the local Armory in the town/county you live in. Look in the Government section of the phone book under "State Government", Military Dept. but honestly, the extreme physical requirements tends to make it a younger mans game.
Be very careful about entering an SF unit not in your own state. True story. I'm the wife.
His long time desire was to go SF. He has a good rank...trained solidly for a year after being accepted to the other state's SF guard unit....previously active duty Ranger... things looked good...stayed with assessment as long as he could physically but over half way (?forget exactly now) through it he had to drop because he couldn't physically do it...goes home...has to find (1) another slot at his rank in that state's guard (2) in another unit (3) willing to take him.
Used to the kinds of disciplined troops that like to do special things, he entered the unit from hell...guys who don't know basic military customs and courtesies...good old boy network... who stand around on drill weekends with their hands in their pockets...take pt rarely, in other words, no discipline...where the guard unit is the best paying job in town and ways are found to promote the locals.
...not all troops are created equally in desire to excel. Just be careful that you have plan B worked out without letting it kill your desire to be the best.
The two 19th Group units in CA are at Redwood City and Los Alamitos. The only Airborne status units are 426th CA in Upland and 301st PSYOP in San Diego (both USAR).
