Hey everybody,

Here's one I'm trying to figure out. As some of you may know, I just went from Active Duty to the Guard, and am in the middle of my first drill this weekend.

I've used Space A flights while on Active Duty, and I like 'em, warts and all (y'know, staying at Charleston or Ramstein for three days while your plane comes along, etc.)

Here's my question: the literature states that Reservists can use Space A flights, with these differences. Only to CONUS and the American possessions, lower priority, and dependents can't. This is, of course, unless one is activated for more than 30 days, in which Space A Travel is authorized as if the soldier is active.

What the literature doesn't say -- and my new first sergeant couldn't answer yesterday (so he asked me to research it) is: can a Reservist or Guard member use Space A flights to, say, go to Hawaii for fun one week when they're not drilling?

I know we need a CAC and an 1853, but can a unit give that to a Guard member just for a holiday, or do they only pass those out if the Guard member is going to a military school or for an emergency?

The new amc site states that the 1853 is good for six months, so I think a Reservist or Guard member can use it for holidays -- but I'm hoping someone out there knows for sure.

Any response is welcome, thanks!

Goggle "John D's Space A" and click on the the first site that comes up in the results. Then click on 'Space-A FAQ' for all the info you need. John says NG (all RC actually) may Space-A travel between all the states & territories. While you're on the home page click on the 'Space-A Travel Links', then under Premier Web-Based Space-A Resources click on the 'Dirk Pepperd's Board' link. There's usage info there that will help you immensely.
Your local unit commander has the authority to complete a DD 1853. When I was the unit full-timer I would fill out the DD 1853 to be valid from the day after drill thru the day before our next drill. Your unit commander has some latitude with going beyond the next drill dates but you'll have to clear your planned absence with your commander first.
Good luck; cul8r.
