hi guys. i am a junior in high school and have been researching some options. Can y'all tell me if this path is possible/good?
1-Take ROTC courses 1st 2 years of college(which is 1 1/2 hours away from my home town).
2-Contract going into junior year and also start SMP. Once graduated branch SMP.
Questions 1-While in SMP could i be deployed? 2-Is it okay to SMP in my home town since I know a lot of the officers and enlisted? 3-How many months of training after graduation would I recieve before joining a unit?
Thanks Zack
PS- i cant go to basic for college b/c wont be 18 until start of freshman year and i dont think my parents will sign for me.
Can't answer for the third one but for the other two.
1. No you can not 2. Yes you can. as for training, if you are joining the guard you can split opt once you are 18 since you will need to belong to a unit to do SMP and have been to basic and AIT. If I am not mistaken after you graduate from ROTC you will need Basic officers course. I am not 100% on the last part though so you will need to speak to a recruiter.
Originally posted by triathlonrunner: i heard that if you have two years of ROTC under your belt it takes the place of basic and AIT if you plan to start SMP later in college. true?
Yes it does. You can either take your first two years of ROTC or just go to Basic Camp (now largely known as LTC) at Ft. Knox and you are exempt from Basic Training/AIT. However, I would not really call it a substitute, because as a cadet doing SMP, you are exempt from activation, so you will not really have an MOS outside 09R (the official MOS for cadet).
If you then dropped out of ROTC, I am not sure if you would then have to go to basic or not. I can guarantee you would then go to an AIT though.
But back to your question, yes, as long as you are enrolled in ROTC, and you then join the Guard, you are exempt from basic and ait.
