If you're talking actually serving as a full-time job, why not shoot for something like the CIA, FBI, NSA, DIA (any of the intelligence services) or even something like becoming a police officer/EMT/fire-fighter?

Now, if you're disqualified for the military, but still interested in "military-esque" things, give consideration to to joining a military auxiliary. The Coast Guard has one and and the Air Force does, as well (the Civil Air Patrol). We're non-paying volunteers, as well.

While we (I'm CAP) aren't Military, we wear military uniforms, abide by USAF/USCG grooming standards, utilize similar rank structure (CAP & the USCG Aux have different ways of doing this). Mainly, we're non-combat, civilian humanitarian organizations that provide emergency service missions such as search & rescue, disaster relief, homeland security and (for CAP) counter-drug operations.

If you're interested in sea-borne operations, USCG Aux would be the way to go, if you're interested in land or air (flying, not airborne) missions, CAP's the way to go.

For more information, the Coast Guard Auxiliary's website is:

http://nws.cgaux.org/index.html

And the Civil Air Patrol website is: www.cap.gov

If you're interested, feel free to ask anymore questions on these two orgs. Post 'em here or e-mail me.

help at the local soup kitchen, at the home less shelter, since you dont have to pass any medical, it would be a great way to serve the country.

The Peace Corps, and the America Corps are also good choices. Once you have been in those organizations a while, other opportunties may arise where you can move into the Civil Service in the DOD, State Dept, Commerce, etc.

Their is also a nationwide shortage of buglers to play TAPS at funerals for people that request it from the VA. In some cases they use a electronic bugler because they cannot find anyone.

Might look at the USO and/or MWR (moral welfare and recreation) stuff. you prob know what the USO is and what they do but the MWR people are the ones who tavel and live right on the same bases and FOB's with the soldier's and they run the stuff like th P/X or the REC center's Phone and internet center's. They are some pretty cool guy's and gal's who do a great job bringing a little relaxing and stress relief to us that are in the uniform.

Last time I was called up for Hurricane relief was hurricane Katrina. We pulled security at locate gas stations and helped out at food, ice, and water distribution points where many local citizens showed up and helped us distribute ice, water, and food. Their help was greatly appreciated.
