Basic Training
Posted
Hello everyone, I am a little confused as to if I will be deployed or not. Here is my setup, I recently joined the National Guard as a Cavalry Scout (19D) and plan to go to Basic & AIT all together starting in Mid February. This means I will not be out of training until early-mid June of 2009. From my understanding my unit is planned to mobilize starting in November-December of this year and be IN Iraq the month of April of 2009. This means they will have been in Iraq for 2-3 months before I even get out of training.

So basically I would like to know where I can find out if I will be deployed late or not? I have asked some people that do not seem to know much about this as I have heard varying answers from yes you will be deployed and have a short training session, and then some saying no even if you are late for the mobilization part you will probably not go to Iraq.

If I have to go to Iraq, then that is what I have to do. I did sign up to do this job and that would be that. But I would just really like to know if I am going to be deployed or not right after I get out of training, because it is a very important issue to me. I plan to go to college and the sooner I can get that out of the way and further myself in the military the better, is the way I look at it.

Thank you all very much for your time, it is much appreciated! Smile

Chances are you will not go to Iraq. You are not deployable until after AIT, and then it doesn't make much sense to go thru all the hassle of deploying you for a partial tour. When we deployed we had a new soldier in a similar position, they went to basic/AIT and then drilled in a nearly empty armory while we were in Iraq.

I am thinking that there is probably a way for your chain of command to expedite your training, or request that you deploy when you are ready, so this is not gospel. I think it is just not likely you will deploy.

Thank you very much XJay, it is much appreciated. If I had the choice I would rather stay in the states right now and try to further my education. But as said above, if I have to go I will do as I am told since this is the job I signed up for.

If anyone else has any information or tips to give me I would really like that as well. Thanks all! Smile

You may be sent to join your unit after your MOSQ'd to back-fill. That happens sometimes.

I was going to say the same thing as Vesuvius. I'd say your chances are low but there's still a possibility they could send you.
