I'm a former Marine. I'm going to be going into the Kentucky Army National Guard as a 13F. I'm curious if being an 0311 rifleman Army's 11B will allow me to get into school quotas that have opening for 11B and not 13F, such as Pathfinder school? Additionally, would I be allowed to take the Expert Infantry test?
Every state have different policies when it applies to training attendance and/or requirements. Most states will not authorize training attendance if the training is outside your Primary MOS (PMOS). This is primarily due to funding constraints as training funds are primarily used for initial award of an MOS or for Additional Skill Indentifer (ASI)training that is required and associated with your PMOS. If it's you desire to attend courses such as Pathfinder, Sniper, etc, then you should seriously look at enlisting as a 11B if Kentucky has not cut them off. If they have and you do enlist as a 11B, look into having your USMC 0311 MOS converted to and awarded it as a Secondary MOS (SMOS). If the opportunity presents itself to transfer from an Artillery Battery to an Infantry Company down the road, it will be easier if you have 11B as a SMOS. Depending on the type of Infantry unit, they more than likely will have duty positions that carry an ASI requirement for a Pathfinder. Good luck.
