Did anyone receive a new testament bible when they enlisted,I did when I joined the Navy in 1951,but I lost mine and don't remember the details of how it looked,it was small and black thats about all I remember about it.
Grits, Don't know if it's the same one but at the Naval Academy they have small bibles there for the asking/taking. Got one when son graduated. Maybe 2.5"X4".
I got one in '59, and I think I still have it somewhere under the artifacts of of 12 or 15 moves. It was small - maybe 3 x 5 inches and had a slip-on brass cover plate for the front cover.
I'm not sure now, but I believe they were provided by some missionary organization.

The Giddons use to give out small red or black leather-like copies but I don't know if it is done any longer. I still have my little 'red book' from boot in 1965. You didn't have to take it, btw. It was optional.
The Gideon's is an international organization made up of Christian Business men who use there own funds to travel around the world and distribute the Bible. The cost of the Bibles is provided through donations via churches and private donors. The Gideons do not preach or prosolytize, just make God's word available to all. Believe me, the Bible made a difference in my life.
When on watch wearing a duty belt and sidearm, you uncover when you enter a space where Divine services are being held, the only exception is when a ------? ceremony is being held.
