I am looking for any info you can provide on CG 40561. My uncle runs it on the Outer Banks for a commercial salvage company and he was wanting to now more info on her. All I have found is that she used to be at Mackinac Island.
If anyone has anything (especially pictures), I would appreciate it!
Dear Sir: CG40561 was built by the Coast Guard's Curtis Bay Yard in Maryland, and completed on 14 FEB 1957. From the information I have, besides Mackinac, it was also stationed at Beaver Island and Charlevoix on the Great Lakes, and then at some point was transferred from the Lakes to Station Ponce de Leon in Florida. I don't have any information, unfortunately, about when specifically it was taken out of service, but I would guess that it would have been in the late 1970s when the 41ft. utility boats were being introduced. Hope this is helpful. Best regards. Tim Dring
Dear Sir: My information is based on various historical documents and searches of old station logbooks that I have accumulated over the course of several years, and unfortunately none of this is on a website (at least yet). I'm sort of a semi-official, volunteer historical consultant to the CG as far as the history of the rescue craft used by both the US Life Saving Service and USCG, and have been helping the CG's Historians Office as well as individual stations and preservation groups. I would be happy to help answer any other questions you may have on these boats. Take care. Tim
I know the OIC that was on Beaver Island in the early 60's. Next time I see him I will ask if he can remember the numbers. He is 89 years old so we will see.
There was a W-4 Bosn in the group office but for the life of me I can't come up with his name. The Group CO was Cdr. Mildrat I think. The mind is not what it use to be after 44 years. Copens not ringing any bells yet.
Jay you may be thinking of Joe Etine(sp) He is still around also He is 90 some. Talk about a nice retirememt. I think he retired as a LCDR. Just saw him in the Memorial day Parade. You would not believe Charlevoix now. I have been here since 79 and alot has changed.
I remember Charlevoix as a beautiful little town with Lake Michigan on one side and overlooking the basin and Lake Charlevoix on the other. Let me throw out some names I do remember that were there. There was Baker BM1, Radatz BM2, Ross BM3, Sudki EN3 Tempalski SN, Kane SN and Woofler SA. The EN1, FN and cook I can't come up with a name. Ross married a girl from there. Her parents owned Cross Fisheries. Spent a lot of time at Irv's Bar. Often thought about takeing a trip back but never did now its hard to get me to go anywhere.
Jay Just ran into BM1 Bob Baker the other day He is alive and well. Irv's Bar, Never heard of it nor has my wife and she is from here. Would that maybe the Topside or the Townhouse? Cross Fisheries is still going strong.I'm trying to think who the guy would be who married a Cross. Could his name be John? Shoot me a e-mail address through Mil.com and I will send you some pictures when I have time.
