If anyone has some good videos of some snotty, nasty Bearing Sea sailing, I would appreciate it. Especially the Boutwell "90 to 93"years with Captain Gross. There was some nasty stuff that my E-4's just don't believe, when I tell them to secure for sea. (when the stapler hits them in the head they'll get the point)!
No video, but, Heres one for ya. 1987 on the Yocona. QMC comes out of his rack flying across the berthing room only to contact his eyesocket with the doorknob. Full size soda machine ripping loose from the bulkhaed and landing on the first row of rec-deck seats. And last but not least walking on the bulkheads. Its awesome when you start the 5 count to see if your comming back to an even keel. Coming from a Bering Sea sailor of 9 years.
I wish I could help you. I have video of my time on Mellon ('01-'04)and a few winter ALPAT's I went on. Problem is, its on VHS and I have no idea how to put it on the computer.
There is some hairy stuff in the video. and in particular, there is a still picture of our engineering JO berthing room was a wreck in one particular wave. Pulled the whole locker system right off the bulkhead and blocked their doorway and no easy way out. The lockers are dang heavy too.
we got hit by a nasty wave- I am sure you know what I mean by saying we were pushed so far over it felt like we would roll. I came flying out of the rack (top) and landed half inside the top rack with another shipmate. We rolled back over the other way and both of us came out of her rack and landed in mine. That is when the JO's lockers came off the bulkhead.
you could probably contact the old ship and ask for a copy of the videos if they still have them onboard.
There are companies that will transfer your movies onto DVD now. There's one doing business down here called iMemories. You may want to see wht's available wherever you are.
The D-17 Public Affairs website used to have a video of the Storis plowing through some heavy seas. Might be worth contacting them to see if they have other footage.
Ive got a few good ones of Alex Haley "Bulldog of the Bering" I'll post a link on monday when I can get back to work and get em. Also there are a few on youtube just search for cgc alex haley and Bering Sea patrol I think its part 1 and part 2 that have some ok footage. They were posted by some cadets who went on summer patrol w/ us. You aint lying about securing for sea, something new comes loose every patrol.
