My Dad, Otto V. Peterson, was on the Taney at Pearl Harbor. The CG.mil history site use to have his picture and story posted but I see it is gone now. He was on the gun that fired the first shot that day from Taney. He said they continued shooting at planes after the Japanese had left!
We always remember the day and put out dads CG collection for others to enjoy. He was a life member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Assoc. and gave his last PH interview at the request of the Coast Guard in 2001, a few days before he 'crossed the bar'.

The Taney was in Honolulu harbor, not Pearl harbor.

I just read today that Frank Erickson was there also. I have to reread the email I got this morning. If true, a lot of folks weren't aware of that.

Just a thought on this day 28 January,

1986 - the loss of the space shuttle Challenger
1980 - the loss of the Cutter Blackthorn
1915 - the U.S. Coast Guard is established from the merger of the RCS & LSS

another noteworthy day.

The Blackthorn tied up behind us when she was stationed in Mobile Alabama late fifties early sixties, had a lot of fun with the crew at the local south side social club, but none of that crew was aboard when she sank, long time ago but seems only yesterday.

One time the Bouncer of the club hit one of the Blackthorn crew members,we ran his azz out of the club,he never came back. Beer
