The Coast Guard commissioned the cutter on July 20, 1943. The cutter measured 289 feet long, 54 feet wide and had a draft of 18 feet. It carried two 5-inch 38 caliber guns, two 3-inch 50 caliber guns, six 20mm anti-aircraft guns and several depth charge arrangements. After conversion, the 37-year-old ship had the double distinction of being the first turbine-driven ship built in the United States and the first helicopter carrier.

Two cutters were named this.
The first was built in 1879 at a cost of $3,900 and used as a ATON tender on Lake Champlain.
The second was built in 1947 at a cost of $805,494. While stationed in the Pacific in 1957 it was painted gray instead of normal Coast Guard colors.
