The number was for tracking purposes since the LS would change stations (name) several times over its life time, for example the Nantucket 1 had the number 612 and was the San Francisco Lightship in 1966 and served on other stations.

I think it was commissioned with the name (Nantucket) and number also.

Pardon for jumping in here a bit late, the Nantuckets.

After the Columbia Lightship was decommissioned on the west coast, that left Nantucket Shoals as the last station. The station was manned by two lightships of basically the same class. The USCGC LIGHTSHIP NANTUCKET 1 (WLV-612) and the USCGC LIGHTSHIP NANTUCKET 2 (WLV-613). The Nantucket 2 was decommissioned about Sept 1984, CWO3 Larry Culley was her last CO. The Nantucket 1 was decommissioned March 1985. I was her last CO.

The WLV-612, manned, San Francisco, Blunts Reef, on the west coast and Portland & Nantucket on the east coast.

The WLV-613, manned Ambrose, east coast RELIEF, then Nantucket.

In the best of New England accents, a bit about her name. The string of Islands below Cape Cod were discovered and explored by Bartholomue Gosnold. He named the islands after his daughters. The Elizabeth Islands, bordering Buzzaeds Bay, Marthas Vineyard, and as he was departing he came across the offshore island and named it after his last daughter Nancy. One island left and _ NAN TOOK IT. Roll Eyes Beer

I recently saw NANTUCKET 1 on the travel channel. She was featured on a program Luxury Vacation Homes. Sure as hell didn't look govt issue after the conversion.

And then, of course, there's the present USCGC NANTUCKET (1987) - WPB-1316

Earp ex Eagle

These mass-produced anti-submarine vessels were designed for quick construction. The first of 100 ordered was begun in May 1918. Only 80 were completed, with many assuming minor roles after the Armistice. Because they were of flat steel plate hull construction, their sea-keeping characteristics were not optimal. When transferred to the USCG these vessels were named for men lost on USCGC Tampa in World War 1

Rhododendron. I remember her. Her OIC told me that when she would pick up a sinker, she would heel over so far that water would wash into the galley. If I recall correctly, that happened when she had the Western Area Inspectors onboard, which precipitated her decommissioning in 1958 or 1959. (Photo from CG Historian's website)

uacatuaquh

The uacatuaquh was homeported at San Francisco, California, from 4 August 1945 to October 1948 and used for law enforcement, ocean station, and search and rescue operations in the Pacific.

DAGINUPL

This vessel was sent to find CG-238 during a gale in February 1927 off Cape Cod. The 75-footer had already foundered and she spent two days in the storm, losing much of her topside equipment, including one of her four stacks. On 17 December 1927 she accidentally rammed and sank the submarine S-4 while the latter was surfacing. S-4 sank and her entire crew was lost. An inquiry absolved the Coast Guard of blame.
