Regarding POTUS on the Eagle. I was there when JFK and LBJ were on board, and as I recall, neither claimed to assume the CO position. BUT we did replace the SOPA flag on the Main mast with the President's flag.

Chief,

I thought for a while Nav not welcome here.LOL.
Seriously, they were cutters/vessels my father served on during his career.

His first duty station was aboard the cutter North Star in Greenland in '41. Did I mispell my scramble? After serving with something called Ocracoke Minefield Patrol, he returned to Greenland in 42-43 on the USS SC597. I think these were Navy PC's and designated as SC's (Sub chasers?). I don't know if this meets the technical definition of CG cutter, as it was under Navy wartime control. Nevertheless, he was the CO and he put her in commnission up near Boston for Greenland duty and was aboard her for 17 months.

The last one in that post was the USS Orlando. Again a Navy DE manned by Coast Guardsmen. He decommissioned her in the late 40's (maybe 49?) in Bremerton WA.

Two previous posts listed other ships he had the privelege of commanding: The USCG Durant, which he put in commission in 1952 as a CG Cutter and his last sea duty was skipper of the USCGC Mackinac out of St. George SI in 62-63. This is the only Cutter he had I ever saw or set foot on.

Thanks for letting me share this with you.

Chief,

Sincere thanks for those kind words.
I was wrong on the ship type and decomm date of Orlando. She was a Patrol Frigate and decommed in '46, not '49. The Durant was the DE/WDE.

He's got a couple of more ships he did 1 & 2 month XO stints on in '46 before getting the Orlando. They must have been laying them up fast & furious in '46 to get the boys out as soon as possible. Study hard. I'll quiz you on Monday. (Grin)

Oh Brother! Another correction. The SC number was not 597. The vessel was USS SC527.
I found some info on her at the link below.
Some nice info located there on all CG ships on the Greenland Patrol. There is a picture of the USS SC528, a sister vessel to SC527.

It appears there is some incorrect info on that site. Also a lot of incomplete info.

For example, the site shows the Eastwing classified as a gunbaot. It was an icebreaker. Also does not list all ships of a class. Only 5-6 327's are listed.
