Can anyone help identify or provide more info on this vessel? It was sent to me by a fellow whose Dad was aboard her in WWII at Georgetown SC during WWII. Looks a little like a converted sub-chaser but can't be sure. Thanks, Dick

Probably was part of the "Corsair Fleet" in early WW2 - when large trawlers and yachts were armed and used to patrol for U-Boats. The CG Historian's office might have further info.

Thanks, I wondered that also but he was an active duty QM. I have asked the Historians Office for any info they may have but it will be a few days.
Thanks again though.

As I understand it the "Corsair fleet" vessels were ID'd with CG or CGR hull number prefixes so the previous post is probably right. You might also contact the national archives. I'd suggest providing them with as much info as possible as their search can hit on any number of items. They take a while to answer. Good hunting!

Dick,
Looking at the transom, it sure appears as a yacht style shape vs the sub-chaser flat transom. Maybe listing as a district patrol craft ??

Thanks for the additional info. The stern was also confusing to me. If/when I receive anything concrete from the Historians Office or elsewhere I will post it here. Appreciate the responses. Dick

Hello everyone. I have just received this from
Nora Chidlow, Archivist for the CG Historians Office.
"The CG 81003 was the former NINA II, in the cutter class. She was built as the NINA II in 1928 - #227340 - and refitted for war service on August 14, 1942. She was disposed of on May 31, 1945 and transferred to the War Shipping Authority. She saw service as CG 81003 from August 6, 1942 to November 11, 1943, doing offshore patrol. (Hmm, the 1942 dates don't jive, but that's what our files say...)

That is all the information we have on her in our files. Once a vessel leaves USCG, we stop tracking it. Obviously, the National Archives will have more information, both in the Coast Guard record group and the War Shipping Authority record group."

Thanks for all your help.

Dick
