I never went down in the engine room ,there were 2 things down there that made a lot of noise
Chief Grits, How you doooin? I went down there once or twice and there were two big noisy things and two little noisy things. Not to mention a bunch of other stuff that looked real complicated.
When the VC were firing at us that was a good place to hang out. Nothing like a Cummins V12 engine block to stop those pesky 7.62mm slugs.
Ropechocker: Point Thatcher 82314 had the turbines. CG could not afford to run them. I think I saw a picture of it in an old thread here someplace. It sunk or went on the beach in Florida in a storm. It is now an artificial reef. I do not have time to look right now in the archives but it is here someplace.

I had a lot of respect for the ENs that kept the noisy engines turning,I can't remember ever breaking down or not being able to get underway.BZ to the snipes.

I thinkthe reason the Pt.Hope 82302 didn't get sent to Nam was she had a engine room fire Jan-Feb 1968 while running a full power trial. I was on the Pt Spencer and relieved the Iris or maybe the Gentian of the tow at Southwest Pass and took her to the yard in NOLA. The whole crew was still on board and the engine room was burned out completly, no power at all. Chief EN rigged a battery with a white light on the stern at dark and I pulled her up tight and hauled *** upriver. Remember the smell of the fire well. Best I recall BMC Huff was OinC.
I towed a shrimp boat in once while on the Point Sal,left it on about 100 feet of tow line instead of taking it along side,when I got to Grand Isle and I got even with the dock area I stopped my engines and let it drift into the pier ,worked well that time but not recommended
The 82 that had the turbines was the Pt Thatcher at Base Miami Beach in the 60's. Can't remember the #. Will have to pull some old photos. She was sent out in a hurricane in 67 and took a wave over her stacks before she got out the breakwater. Drounded out the turbins. Went over the breakwater wound up on the beach behind the hotels. They refloated her and towed her to Baltimore. Thats when the engines were changed.
