Hello All
I came across a color photo dated July 1962 of President Kennedy and the under secretary of the Navy aboard a Coast Guard cutter. The caption stated that the President was aboard COAST GUARD ONE and they were in Southwest Harbor Maine. The photo was taken on the stern of the cutter next to what appears to be a large mushroom vent. It doesn't appear to be any CG craft I'm familiar with. The deck is steel but it doesn't appear to be a 95' or 82' patrol boat. Also is anyone familiar with the patrol group that provided JFK with security at his summer home on Cape Cod. I've heard bits of info but never the "full story" as to equipment and personnel. Thanks in advance for any info on this subject.
Regards
Mike Maynard

The Hyannis Patrol used 40'UTBs to provide waterside security and boat escorts in the Hyannisport area. If I recall correctly, I think it was BMC Dick Hargett/Haggett the OinC of Scituate Station in 1970-72 that mentioned he was assigned to that detail. I almost recollect that the new fiberglass 40s because of their speed were the boats in service.

The stern photo could be one of the USN aluminum PTs that were built in the early 1950s and were the predecessors of the PTF "Nasty" class of the VN war. For those digging into it, most likely the PT 809, an aluminum boat built in Groton by Electric Boat. Navy records have her detailed as an escort to the Presidential yacht in 1959. WE ( the US) have had a variety of Presidential Yachts.

Here from Haze Gray and Underway is a listing of them.
Presidential Yachts

Look closely at the Mayflower and the Potomac, as they have connection to the Coast Guard.

When President Kenneddy was inaugrated he noted that there no minoritys marching in his parade. He ordered an investigation. At that time it was estimated that less than one half of one percent of the Coast Guard was black.
I happend to be stationed at the C.O.T.P. New Orleans when he came to visit and was in the honor guard for him. He also said that the military was out of shape and started a fitness program that we all had to pass.
After being transfered to the reserves when my regular enlistment was over I received standby mobilization orders during the Cuban crisis.
I remember President Kennedy well!!

True, but the program was about as successful as the current requirements. In other words, not too! I was at NMH (now TISCOM) at the time, and there was a lot of talk about it, but little action.
