You should define what you mean by MOH. There is the one that is the highest military decoration and one that is a special presentation of Congress, they are not the same.
Hanna received his while serving in the Civil War in the Army. Besides those who received theCongressional that Master's Mate mentioned are the three officers who were on the Overland Expedition (one was a doctor): Call, Bertholf, and Jarvis. |

Brings to mind a more current question. In our current campaigns in the mideast (Iraq, Afganistan, et al.) how manyCoast Guardsmen have been awarded significant medals with 'V' attachments?
And also, how many Congressional MOH's have been awarded in all during this past several years since our invasion and occupation? |

Master Chief that's a great question! I'm curious to see what types of replies are made. I do know that the PB CO's (LTjg's LT's) were awarded bronze stars a few years ago while their hardworking crews got the fid. Also I believe PO Bruckenthal was awarded the purple heart postumously, not sure if he recieved something else as well. Happy Holidaze! -Jeff |

There was another Coastie that had received the MOH, but was flying for the Air Force. I believe it was during Vietnam. I can't remember his name. They had just found his remains about a year ago.

I think you are talking about the helicopter pilot, his name was Jack Rittichier. He did not receive the MOH. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart, the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, a Coast Guard Unit Commendation, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. There are aslo a couple buildings dedicated to him. |

I believe two Bronze Star decorations with "V" device.
BM3 Ruggierio & DC3 Bruckenthall, A number of Bronze Star decorations were presented for meritorious service to the COs of cutters. Only one response has been made to the question of whether the crews of those cutters recieved a Unit Commendation of some degree for enabling the COs to perform at that level to recieve that decoration. |

Commander Steve Weiden was awarded the Bronze Star for his meritorious service in Iraq, the first person to receive a Bronze Star from the Coast Guard commandant since 1941.
I have known Steve since he was an ET2 or so back in Port Canaveral, many many years ago... He did the right thing and lateraled over to BM.. Look where it got him.. Wray... |

In answer to your question, I served in Vietnam aboard the CGC Halfmoon (WHEC 378). I don't know if the skipper got a Bronze Star ( I don't Think so), but we were awarded a Navy Unit Commendation, as well as the RVN Gallantry Cross Unit Citation to go with the Vietnam Service medal w/ one bronze star, Vietnam Campaign w/ device, and the National Defense Sevice Medal. To my knowledge, and I have researched this, only one Coastguardsman has been awarded the CMOH and that was BM1 Douglas Munro at Guadalcanal. He was in charge of a squadron of higgins boats and they were eveacuating Marines. The Japanese were dug in to bluffs about 500 yds in and above the beach. He maneuvered his boat in between the Japanese and the other boats to provide some cover so as to complete the operation and was shot and killed during the process. Charlie S. |

Munro was a Signalman 1st class, not a BM. |

OOPS, I got this from this site under "News", "Paths of Services Meet on a Bloody Beach in the Pacific". It didn't identify his rate, just that he was a PO1. I assumed he was a BM, as he was a boat Coxwain and OIC of a dozen Higgins boats. Then again, being a Coastie, one rate, cross trained to do a dozen different jobs. Charlie S. |

Also, it was not the CMOH that was awarded to Douglas Munro, but the Medal of Honor.

The CG put LT John Pritchard in for the CMOH in 1942/43. We recently located a letter starting the process (I have to read it again for RM1 Bottoms). The Army supported it. I suspect the Navy shot it down. There might be more to follow on that in the future.....

Congressional Medal Of Honor or Medal Of Honor? Either is correct. http://www.cmohs.org/ |
