My dear daughter ( who is about to graduate a double major
The photo series is the middle coumn of the page and is headed: Coast Guard 'Capsize' Maneuvers Below that are five photos in sequence from capsized to righted boat. Below these is the lengthy caption:
I would do the photos injustice trying to scan and put them here as the printout is grainy, but I thought it would make a nice slice of history for others. The left column story is headed: Roosevelt Strives For Neutrality in Mussolini Crisis The right column story is headed: U.S. Army Tests New War Planes Before Purchase sindbad sends |

Found these similar photos from a site by a fellow named Don Nelson. He has done a lot on the old 36' wood lifeboat. http://www.pasty.com/~barbspage/MLB.HTML |

Hey - a great example of RHIP! It looks like the Coxn was able to keep everything but his ankles dry during that manuever!

A good keeper in the USLSS could do this and keep dry--not always, but sometimes.
It is interesting to see this drill accomplished on motion picture film that has surived from late 19th century and early twentieth century. |

That ship standing off in the background looks official--anyone know that vessel's name?

For the detectives to get busy, some clues.
The site lists the photo as 1916 at Mackinac Island. It states, note the Revenue Cutter in the backround. Right at the RCS/CG transition period. I looked at the CG Historians site for photos of older cutters, but no luch so far. Is there a listing of early Cutters assigned to the Great Lakes ??? This message has been edited. The picture does not look like Mackinaw Island to me. It is too built up for that location. There is a book that covers most of the USRCS cutter by Donald Canney. Forgot the title--my memory is quickly fading away--but you should be able to find it on Amazon. |
