I know at the end I must decide whats best for myself. However, I would like some input on what to do. I graduated last Aug with Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies. I have been researching the route to becoming an AF officer. I realize that my background is not competitive enough for me to be selected for OTS. Plus the road to OTS can take at least a year. I am considering enlisting just to get my feet and see if the air force is right for me. I have also been told that going in as enlisted will decrease my chances in becoming an officer. How difficult is it for an enlisted college graduate to become commissioned?
Enlisting for a chance to later go through a commissioning program isn't necessarily the best option if you know that you would want to serve as an officer as opposed just wanting to serve your country for four years doing whatever.
Try talking to the commissioned officers (not the cadet officers) at a nearby college Air Force ROTC program to see what options they have for you. I've known a couple of people who already had their degree and went through the 2 year program to get commissioned since their bachelor wasn't in something OTS was looking for. One earned a masters during those two years, the other took personally interesting classes. Right now on "www.afrotc.com" it looks like the shortest program they have is the 2 year one, but I know that in the not so distant past they also had a 1 year program. Of course, that was before the Air Force decided to "right-size" a few years ago.
