I was wrapping up my AECP package when I heard about this program and said to myself, "Why not?"
The education center could not elaborate too much on this scholarship, so I am seeking people who know information about it or, even better, have utilized it.
Anyways, here is my situation... I am a chemical engineering major with 4.0 GPA that is interested in pursuing medical school. As a result, I trashed my AECP package and am looking to finish my degree and apply for the HP scholarship - well, apply to medical school[s]. My reenlistment is coming up and I am, in all likelihood, going to seal the deal for 4 more years and EPCOT (sp?). EPCOTing would allow me to remain in the lovely state of Alaska for an additional 4 years and finish my degree at UAA.
Now, because the AF is always looking for medical professionals to join it's ranks, am I safe in assuming that upon acceptance to medical school that I would be capable of attending without much hassle? Supposedly, I would be placed on inactive reserve status and commissioned as a 2nt Lt. until completion of medical school. Additionally, I would be required to serve for no less then 45 days of active duty annually. This scholarship is great, it would save me $250,000.00 and I get to serve in a position more akin to my abilities and liking.
If the education office could not provide too much info on it, contact your local officer accessions recruiter. You can get more info at www.airforce.com.
You may also want to look into the military's own medical school in Bethesda, Maryland (USUHS). You get all the benifits that HPSP has and you are a full time 2LT so you get your full pay while your only job is passing medical school. You would owe more years than HPSP, but the income you get is much better than HPSP and you will not have to take out a loan to eat or live while in school. Give it a thought and good luck. As to HPSP, get ahold of the professional medical recruiter, any military recruiting office should be able to get the number for you.
