I recently graduated from a college with a strong reputation in engineering and earned a BS in civil engineering with a 3.32 GPA. I am considering applying for OTS and continuing my career as an engineer in the Air Force. I was wonder if engineers in the Air Force receive any help in preparation for the PE exam? I thought I have read somewhere that the PE is not perused by the armed forces for civil engineers, is this true? I would think that this would really hurt a civil engineer's civilian career after retirement from the military. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Besides for using Tuition Assistance or your Post 9-11 GI Bill benefits to take college courses, there isn't any AF program for PE testing that I'm aware of. You need to have at least 4 years work experience to take the test anyway. While I can't provide any insight into whether any AF positions require you to be a PE, I agree that not having it could be detrimental to a civilian career.
Having taken the FE Exam, I highly reccomend taking the FE ASAP. There's a lot of information in there that you'll never see again and will quickly forget and its good for 10 years. |

Thank you for the response, I took the FE my last semester of college and passed. My worry is you need the 4-5 years of supervision under a licensed engineer before you can take the PE yourself. No PEs in the Air Force means no liscense and would leave most senior project management opportunities closed in my post service engineering career.
