Robersabel Member Posted Sat 16 September 2006 09:33 Discovered paperwork for deceased ETO WWII veteran medically discharged after liberated. Paper identifies War Claims Commission with a number "20909". VA people state he never applied for disability. Military records were destroyed in the fire at St. Louis Would appreciate any assistance. Posted Wed 11 October 2006 08:33 I was stationed at Langley AFB VA assigned to the 27th Fighter Squadron which was deployed to Prince Sultan AB for Operation Southern Watch in Aug 98 time frame. During the deployment I sustained a lower back injury and received limited care from the Medical folks at Prince Sultan AB. The paperwork for that incident never made it into my medical records by the time I retired in Jun 99. At the time it was no big deal, however my lower back condition has progressively gotten worse since 2003 to present. These medical records would support my disability claim through the VA. Can you offer any suggestions on ways to retrieve those missing records? I have reviewed my permanent medical records and I'm positive this incident is not documented. Contact your unit command. Dave Barker -also- Posted Tue 14 November 2006 12:20 Hey I am needing my vaccination records from Basic but I have no clue how I go about getting them I tried a few numbers to Ft. Benning thats where I went thru basic but no help there. If anyone can help at all would be great thanks. Posts: 21 | Registered: Tue 18 April 2006 lanamelendez Member Posted Tue 14 November 2006 15:12 They should be in your medical records. If you are active duty, look there. If not, you will have to order your medical records from St. Louis, MO. Obviously, this is still being fielded, but if a veteran went through BCT/boot camp in the last five years (or more, if AF), it's worth a shot ... apologies for the bad pun. I had all my medical records but never thought would be important so only kept hold of my dd-214 so would I contact St louis about getting copy or am I just screwed since lost them once already? Posts: 21 | Registered: Tue 18 April 2006 post by Mizab posted Tue 14 November 2006 21:39 tcaldetroit Member Posted Wed 15 November 2006 05:07 that is true. look in your local phonebook for VA, call them and they should be able to give you the number to medical records in st louis or call your local recruiting office and they should have that info to get a hold of your medical records. you can also contact va through the internet also. If you are still active or reserve you can get some info through your ako account. You will probably have to fill out the forms and send a copy of your dd 214. I went through the same thing with my ex husband. You might even be able to fax the paperwork in and then send the original to them. I wish I was more help. Your SMR's are either at NPRC or in your VA claims file if you ever filed a VA claim for compensation. Please keep related topics on a minimal of threads. I just read a reply from Betina333 about missing medical records. What fire in St. Louis, and when?
Late in '94 when I was preparing to ETS ('95)I had my kids' records all copied. However, mine never were, because . .well because they said I had to do it myself and I didn't have much spare time(poor excuse). I didn't get them when I was out, because I was contemplating the Reserves for quite a while and thought I should leave the records in St. Louis. Now, I feel extra stupid. Please give me some hope. Thank you for your time. |

The fire was at the NPRC in St. Louis in 1973. Many records have been reconstructed. If you were separated after 1973 your records would not have been affected.
I do wish to inform all on this forum that I have been reassisgned moderation duties to the PTSD Information and Links, also Agent Orange and Desert Storm to Iraq/Afghanistan forums. As a result my monitoring here will be greatly diminished. However these forums are falling under the jurisdiction of one the the best, if not the best moderators in Military.com history that is SSGTDeCurtis. I can be found for information on PTSD, chemical exposures, environmental issues claims at: http://forums.military.com/eve/forums/a/cfrm/f/247197221 This message has been edited. Dave got a question?
LOD Mar76, host nation hospitial, transfered and released from Army Hospital. C4-7 severed. Retired Jul93, released from WRAMC. Verterbraes fussed over time. Never claimed disabilty yet Retirement Physical is documenting C4-7 injury. Recent injury of the same in a vehicle, am not getting any better, and TRICARE has done nothing other than recommend surgery. (Insurer seems to have their feet in mud). Is my best route through VA (AMVETS/etc) or dialouge and emhasis of other opinions thru TRICARE and insurer? Salute! |

Your best bet is to contact a veterans service officer and discuss the issues. AMVETS/DAV/Legion/PVA and VFW have good NSO's please give them a call.

Dave,
What is the best way to get old x-ray films once you retire? I tried calling the military medical facility where they were taken back in JAN of 03 to no avail. They told me to call the VA in St. Pete and they told me something different. Would my AMVETS VSO be able to help me with this? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, USCG Ret. |

I have had several veterans bring the old x-rays to me. Which they had requested at their time of separation. My suggestion would be to request them through the National Personnel Record Center. When I have requested complete copies of service medical records, the x-rays have never been included, only the written interpretations by the radiologist. |

My error, I thought you meant veterans I spoke with. Sorry. Yes a VSO can request searches for records at NPRC and service hospitals. |

Dave,
Thank you very much! I am meeting with my AMVETS VSO next week. I will enlist their help. Trying to scrape some money together for my AMVETS membership. Thanks to you, all veterans, our advocates and our families for all the support because some, not all, medical proffesionals DO NOT care about us. Regards, USCG Ret. |

Bless you! Thanks for not scolding me on my dummy answer! I had a rough day, due to another family death (2 this year) and my brain was in la la land. It is always best to have a VSO order records to eliminate SNAFUS's. I personally have the personnel records sent to me, thus I can certify the copies for VA. |

Got out of the Guard (Arkansas) in 1999, re-enlisted in 2003. I have not been able, nor has my unit, to gain control of my previous medical records. Been through the state PRB, know that they were initally sent to the control group in St. Louis, and they seem to have disappeared from there.
Got any suggestions? |

My first suggestion is to contact the Arkansas National Guard Adjutant General's office. Most likely the service medical records are there. The second best location would be the Department of the Army Records Processing Center in St. Louis, and lastly National Personnel Records Center.

hey dave, not so much a newbie on this board. i was 30% service connected, after retiring from the coast guard in 2002 for diabetes and hypertension. i had a massive stroke last june, and was at a vamc from july to january. the va treated me very well. i hsve a great vso who is working hard to get me to 100%. if my typing is off, i have paralysis in my left arm, and cant type 60 wpms like i used to. during my time in the cg, i was taught, and still did, was to make sure that every member separating from the service have a certified copy of their personnel and medical records. i always made 2 med recs, 1 for the member, and one for va or whenever they needed it. also, before you are released, make and certify tons of copies of the signed dd-214, then give them to everybody! it may sound silly at the time, but in 8 years, when silly you can't find your original, but aunt gertrude had a copy
when you go to the vso or other, make sure you have those records with you, come prepared. my vso knew that iwas prepared, but i blew social security away! for the first couple of weeks, everything they asked for, i had i hope this helps, have a good day! |

Chris you are a Star! Thanks for the outstanding advice. Welcome to the place where we attempt to steer veterans on the right course! Getting copies is great and expedites your VSO's working for you. Recently several veterans have brought their ORIGINAL service medical records into my office. The originals are property of the service component and not supposed to be released to the separating member. There is to much danger of the records being lost. When a veteran brings the records into my office, I explain the regulations to them. I then take the records to VAMC's release of information where a copy is made for the veteran. The ROI people forward the service medical records to teh VARO where thay become a part of the claim. The infamous 1973 fire has given VA ample excuse to deny claims, due to lack of proof. Regulations are clear, no proof, no award. The loss of the service medical records is greatly enhanced when taken home after the release from active duty. Lost while moving, loss in a home fire, loss when an irate spouse gets even. On and on.... |

though i was not a medical person, i have been stationed at units where i maintained smrs. there are many cg units that are small, and the people in the chain of command are not properly trained about the regs. in turn, most keep their records, and when i ask for them, they say "it's my record". as for the dd-214. i cannot tell you how many people call me up to a year after they got out, saying they lost it! during my time at the saginaw vamc last year, i complained that i could not go to see a vso aboutraising my disability. i then found out that my vso started the process with my dad while i was in transit, and was under medication. once i was medically under control, i did my research via the internet and chatted with other vets, i was able to learn alot. once i talked to my vso, we both were on the same page. i know how long the process took, but at least i knew where i was at. i hope to hear back soon. the only thing i have seen is how many non-service connected people make it through the system, and how they demand, and get treated better than us service connecteds. i could go on, and if i do, with only one hand typing, i can wear out typing with my middle finger!
take care, and have a good day! |
