Hi, I was just wonding How I could have spent 7weeks in a Military Hosp. in Fort Sam Houston, Texas and the records just Disappeared after My discharge. I did not know these recored did not exist in my files until resently. I had made many request for my records in the past but was always told the records were on loan to the V A Regional Office in Houston. So I finly made a request for My complete V A records and that is when I discoverd that I had no Military records in my files before my dischage date, only a separation order form and no other records, no medical, no other records at all. My Question is - is this common to many Veterans.

Did you try contacting this organization?
http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/ Is how I tracked down service/pay/medical/dental records for a family member in search of particularly medical records. The site instructs you on how to request your copies. |

Yes I have tryed contacting the Hosp. and they say the as the V A or Veterans Affairs ofice, and every other place I check with, they all tell me your Military records were sent to the National Personnel Records Center-St Louis,Mo. I have made two three request over the years and another request just last week. Each time the request came back the same. Your records are on loan to the Houston Regional Office. I'll have to wait to see if this request is going to be the same?

I had made many request to the Nation Personnel Records Center, in St Louis, Mo., but was allways told my records were on loan to the V A or Veterans Affairs in Houston. So I got copies of what the V A had and made a request at at the same time to St Louis, mo. and the information I was looking for some how was sent. There is some information still missing but I think this is a good start at the recover of what may have been with helled for years.

I would like to add that yes other disabled veterans have had these problems and more between regular Army and VA Affairs Offices. There was an order signed by the Department of VA Affairs and Washington DC purging all veterans records at the VA Hospital Records and military records of any evidence that would cause the veteran to recieve monies for their injuries while on military duty. I found this information from one of the VA Hospital Staff in Wyoming on his retirement date from is VA retirement. The dates of the purging was from 1970 thru 1989. The reason for it was that some were in your military svc you became injured or sick and you would be filing for VA Compensation. So, records became lost or purged as a result of this order given out by congress. Too many veterans were returning home from the Vietnam War Era sick or disabled. It would have put too much strain on the Federal Government to pay for your medical expenses and you would have been given a check for life. Purging of the medical records of for soldiers was justified in their limited opinion. Purging the records got rid of all evidence of injury reports and accident reports in your (Veteran's Favor) so allot of us veterans here have been complaining of missing medical records or reports of injury. Purging records means destroying these records on purpose so no claims for compensation could legally be filed. Get it! |

This is a rather amazing artical, as I was denied compensation after I left service in 1972 and after having surgery on my back in1973. in which I filed claim as I injured my back in Vietnam and was sent to aid station in which I presumed there was a record of. But low and behol when I filed claim it came was denied because of no records. In the mean time I've only undergone 3 more back surgeries and after appeal one after another I like I'm sure so many others just gave up. |

I was told that there was a fire at the St Louis records center in 1973 and records for a certain portion of the alphabet were destroyed. My service was from 1956 thru 1960. I spent two weeks in the hospital at Hamilton AFB, California. We were also subjected to experimental flu vaxines at Lowry AFB, Colorado in 1956 and 1957. It sure seems convinent for the AF to have lost these records detailing these experimental flu shots. I sure don't remember volunteering for this medical experiment. All I remember is the flu that put me in the hospital for three days at Lowry. I really would like to be able to get my medical records and if anyone knows a way to get them please let me know.

Why would any VA Office hold my records so long and deny me compensations because, they made a mistake in my case and were hoping I would die so it could be covered up and no black eye on their part. What lengths the US Government will go to, to cover up a mistake on their part. My only parting question is just this how could the VA not find records located right in their own office for 25 yrs? ( Denver VA Regional Office, Lakewood, CO) |

SO, I am NOT crazy!! I recently applied for service-connected disability, because I wasd in a terrible auto accident when I was in the USMC (1973-1976). THey said no record of it in the file. I couldn't understand why there would be no record, especially since the accident made me a few days late arriving at my duty station. I have ordered my records from St. Louis; will see what happens when I get that jacket.
