Just after being discharged from the Army Everything that I owned was Stolen or destroyed. When I PCS'd out of Hood they gave me my medical folder(yes my actual folder). This just so happns to have been one of the items of loss. Is there anything that I can, should, or maybe should have taken action on?

You don't say when you were discharged. If it was within the last 4-5 years, much of your data would have been entered into the AHLTA computer system - at least your clinic visits, hospitalization records, immunization records and that sort of thing. Perhaps NOT visits to your troop medical clinic for routine sick call; then again, maybe so - it depends on how computerized the TMCs were.

At any rate, you can request a certified copy of your computer records. You will have to go through the records center in St. Louis HRC to do it, and it may take a couple of months, but you are entitled to it and it's better than having nothing ... especially if you run into problems down the road that you feel may be service-connected.

In addition, because your SSN, DOB and other personal information is all over those documents, you should report the theft to the military (again, through St. Louis HRC) and certainly to the Social Security Administration. You might want to check with your local law enforcement authorities to see if there are others who should be notified.

Good luck.

to mirror what cider33 posted: yes, definitely report your missing folder to both local and federal (for fraud alerts) civilian and military authorities.

Check your credit rating since your social / dob / other pertinent info is all over those records. (identity theft)

did you apply for va benefits? When I left Hood, a copy of my records were submitted to the VA and my originals were returned.

If it was not too long ago; and there were any other specialty clinics or surgeries involved: those records are maintained for a short time within the clinics (radiology/surgical & nursing notes/etc)

be vigilant and good luck.
