Comments or suggestions are appreciated. I've tried various ways over many years to locate in-country records of treatment at two hospitals, 3d Surgical (Saigon) and 24th Evac (Long Binh), plus the battion aid station at my basecamp. (Rach Kien) I've requested through the VA and wrote the Records Center at St. Louis. (the VA sent me an extremely poor copy of my stateside records with one RVN record sheet; St. Louis said nothing there) I've even tried reversing my name, etc... Seems numerous 9th ID records were either lost, destroyed, or misfiled somewhere; my numerous in-country records were never married up with my main file. It makes the difference between CRSC and CRDP for me. I was approved for CRSC but at a lower percentage than my CRDP SC rating. Even a very specific and thorough letter from my RVN Company Commander with his testament as to combat injuries I sustained did not effect the CRSC board's decision. If I could find the missing records they would substantiate my CRSC claim. QUESTION: Has anyone out there had any success in locating in-country records from any or either of these medical facilities. I suspect one problem was the phased redeployment of the 9th ID brigades during the period of my combat tour. Another factor may have been my attached status to the Infantry from my Artillery parent unit. To date, I have one (one!) single sheet record total of in-country treatment (ear infection) even though I was hospitalized twice, wounded (awarded PH), and also hospitalized for malaria. Frustrating at best; especially when a board made up of mostly combat veterans disallows or minimally awards the CRSC claim of a combat veteran (3 valor awards and a PH) substantiated with a letter from his RVN commander. Go figure. My advice to all combat veterans of the recent conflicts: DO NOT expect the Army to safeguard your medical file. Assume nothing. As for the common advice regarding letters from those you served with substantiating your claim; don't count on it... Short of hard files, you're up the creek.
