It's official, DD-214s are NOW online. The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following websites for veterans to gain access to their DD-214s online: http://vetrecs.archives.gov or http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html
This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of his/her DD-214 for employment purposes. NPRC is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files. Miliary veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online military personnel records system to request documents. Other individuals with a need for documents must still complete the Standard Form 180, which can be downloaded from the online website. Because the requester will be asked to supply all information essential for NPRC to process the request, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask veterans for additional information will be minimized. The new web-based application was designed to provide better service on these requests by eliminating the records center's mailroom processing time. Please pass this information on to former military personnel you may know and their dependents. |

You Can NOT view the Dd-214's on-line. Repeat, Can NOT.
You CAN request them on-line (instead of doing the SF-180). After completing the request, you must print, sign and mail in a signature verification page. The Veteran or their next of kin (if the veteran is deceased) can request copies. Not having to complete the SF-180's has drastically reduced the turn around time on requests for DD-214's. Most are coming back to my vets in 2-4 weeks, as oppossed to the average 6 month turn around before. again...DD-214's CAN NOT be viewed on-line. That CAN BE Requested on-line. Well, you wont be able to get a DD-214, but you can get a certificate of military service.
What you will need to do is gather as much data about his military service as possible. Date of entry, place of entry, units assisgned to, dates assigned, Date of discharge, place of discharge, etc. When you request his DD-214 you will get a letter back stating it was one of the ones destroyed along with a form for you to put all the information about his service. From what I am told, they use that information to search other records and verify the service and they then issue the certificate. |

Cider33 has conveyed proper info. Never stating that your dd214 can be viewed. But that it can be accessed, through that website. Thanks Cider33[/QUOTE] Yes, he did...originally in the thread there were additional posts by folks who mistakenly thought their DD-214's would be viewable on-line. They were the ones I was replying to. |

I might be mistaken but I havent noticed anyone mention You can only use the evetrec site to request or view your records if you are out of the service. If you are still in the military in anyway you have to go through your unit admin. I know because I've been trying to get copies of my medical records for 2 month's now and just recived them today. Even for me active guard it was like getting that blood from the stone you hear about.

This has been a continuing problem for many years. It is essential for any veteran to secure there paperwork well in advance of any potential claims. Remember that the Veteran's Administration runs on paperwork just like the military. It is their task to follow Federal law and provide service to veterans.
No matter the period of service of the veteran, it has always been important to save a DD-214 from time of discharge and keep in in a safe place. This will help avoid any potential problems in the future. Remember; documentation is the most important thing. Dear Sir,
After serving in Vietnam in 1969 I was discharged to the Massachusetts National Guard who never had a complete DD 214 record of me as I had been awarded the Army Commendation medal while serving in Nam by the Secretary of the Army and it never was added to my DD 214 nor did I get the metal or ribbon for it. I served in the 3rd/18 Arty with the American Division from May thru Nov 1969. |

JEFFDUBE:
Thanks for your post. I think you are wondering if you can get your records updated. If that is your question, check with the Branch of Service or a great VSO or a Vet Center for some local help. If you are due the medal, I am sure you will get it in time.
