I am wondering, after I enroll my children into DEERS at Ft Sill how long until it becomes effective? Will I get paperwork to send to my ex-husband so that he can find a local doctor for our children while I am gone? We have a young one who'll need glasses before school so we're trying to figure out how we want to handle that but don't have enough information how the system works. Thank you for your assistance.

Your husband will have to get the kids their ID cards, which will also require a power of attorney.

Once they have their ID cards you need to register for TRICARE, which is the military health system. Once they are in TRICARE they are covered.

Your recruitor should be able to help you out with more detail information on this process.

they will be covered under STANDARD immediately upon being entered into DEERS. they will need to be enrolled into PRIME and dental. Standard has co pays but is much moire flexible interms of how it operates. Prime is no out of pocket costs so long as you go through the Primary Care Manager and use the base pharmacy. Dental is $32? per month for all dependents, that covers 2 cleanings per year and one set of x rays per year. everything else has a co pay of up to 80%.

keep in mind that only the eye exam is covered.. NOT the actual glasses nor are contacts or contact exams covered.

you will have to fill out a form authorizing your Ex to get the kids their IDs( he does NOT get one). there should also be a form to fill out authorizing him limited access to base facilities so that he can do stuff like shop for the kids school supplies onbase.
