I am currently 40% disability rating thinking about trying to rejoin A/D Army. I was not discharged from the Army on a medical. Just trying to weigh my options. Would love to rejoin but hate to lose the disablility rating. Looking for some input from anyone. I can pass the PT and all that good stuff. Just so undecided. Thanks in advance for all the help!!
I am pretty well qualified to answer this....I am prior service, a former recruiter and veterans' rep. I just went through the agonizing process of enlisting. Before you are totally led astray:
Here's the skinny... You can begin the process and you may be successful. I am 44 years old, and I am a 40% DV. I am going in on the 13th of Feb. Yes, you need to suspend your disability AFTER you are on orders (in other words, as of your ship date, not earlier). Points:
1) The VA NEVER lets you "give up" your disability rating, but does suspend it. Upon ETS, reapply.
2) Almost anything can be waived. The key is to have all medical documents to your recruiter and provide as much NEW info on each condition for which you are recieving disability. Key words on any new exams are "No Limitations For Military Service". Ensure you have x-rays, exam and clinic notes, MRIs, etc...to your recruiter for a "med read".
3) DO NOT accept No as an answer to your enlistment. Push and push hard....continually!!!! If I gave up eevery time I heard no, I would never have gotten in EVER (and I heard no alot).
4) If you can, get a PT test from a Reserve or Guard unit prior to your med read and provide the results as part of your evidence. Also, prepare a Letter in Support of Enlistment. Cover all areas for which you may be disqualified, and document the reasons that these conditions either no longer exist, or will not interfere with your ability to meet standards.
Bottom line...Be up front with your recruiter. Hide nothing. Be prepared for disqualification, but DO NOT GIVE UP! Believe you can, and others will believe with you. Hope to see you downrange, brother.
Thanks for the insight. Does this mean after I retire or ETS that I am able to recoup the 40% or will I have to go through the physicals to reconfirm my rating? My Disability was given through the VA not medically discharged from the ARMY.
Like fitzpatrick44 said, your 40% rating will be suspended, but will always be in your records. You will have to go through a Medical Exam just like the one you went through to get the 40% all over again.
