I just got through with OCS and i am fixing to start my BOLC II and III in the comming months. My duty station is going to be at WSMR and was wanting to know if anyone had any recent insight to this post. I am a fairly young single 2LT, is there anything to look forward to? i am supposed to be attached to a SAPPER company so i look forward to that. I am going to be a Transportation Officer so i am curious to what i would do attached to an engineer unit.. any insight is appreciated.

The base itself is pleasant, though very hot in the summer. Theres nothing around outside the base for 50+ miles though. Honestly I dont think I would want to be stationed there, officer or otherwise, simply because its in the middle of nowhere.

The PX leaves something to be desired as well...

Good luck sir.

Well thanks..im going to make the best of it that i can. Go to as many schools as they will let me go to and keep busy. Does WSMR even deploy? i have heard both ways. i am indifferent to the idea, i will go if my unit deploys i have no problem with that, im not the guy jumping up and down begging to go either though..it is, what it is...

your units area hasn't even been built yet.
it is going to be big and new.
of ocourse this was a mostly civilian run base , but now that the influx of 15000 soldiers and family members there are big changes in the works.
new baracks, pool , e-club, MWR facilities,
I like being here. its peaceful, safe.

When I was in WTC there they were saying that there would only be 1 more WTC class thru WSMR because the entire state of NM, including all the WTC cadre and support, was getting ready to deploy. The new WTC area will be in San Diego or somewhere close to that, so they said.

I dont know what you heard ,or what the person who said it was smoking but this program has never been slotted to move to California.
Ft Sill has taken some all male overflow classes, and another state guard is going to take that over from them.

my understanding is that as an active duty BN they will take their turn in the mix.

Not trying to steal the thread. Any word on what unit is standing up there at White Sands? I am a 11B E-5 currently deployed to Iraq with 4-10. I heard it is a (Heavy) BCT. If true I am very interested on getting involved with
another new unit. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I can't remeber the name of the base But there is a big AF base up the road about 15 to 30 mins away. Which has a full PX/BX. Its a drive but you do have that option.

Las Cruces is pretty nice. Got about anything you might need there. It'll be interesting to see how it looks after they get it ready for all those troops.

I will never be Anything 'til I break away from me
And I will break away
I'll find myself today
