I am a prior Service Marine Sgt, the recruiter told me that I don't need to go to WTC since I was in the Marines(got out Aug 2006). I will ship to AIT after my MEPS processing. Does anybody know how this process works out (uniform issue, weapons qualifaction, badges, ribbons and medals, travel etc)? My target date to ship is around May or June timeframe after I finish this semester in college. Civy life is not for me I found out this past year and a half. I don't want to report to my school and first duty station as they say "lost in the sauce" since I am going back in as a Sergeant. I aiming to become a medic or laboratory tech specialist since I am studying to become a nurse (sophomore year in college right now)and take nursing classes while I'm in the Army and sometime in the near future get a commission for my nursing degree.

Thanks for the time reading my questions!

Sgt Vales

WELL VAGABOND,
I HOPE YOUR RECRUITER IS RIGHT , BUT I DONT THINK SO.
WAIT TIL YOU GET TO MEPS TO FIGURE OUT IF YOU ARE COMING TO WTC OR NOT.
YOUR RECRUITER DOES NOT ALWAYS STAY UP ON THINGS FROM MEPS. YOU CAN SAY THEY ARE "LOST IN THE SAUCE"
LET ME KNOW.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR PAPERWORK i.e. DD214 FOR AWARDS AND SUCH WHEN YOU GO TO MEPS.
GOOD LUCK

Marines are the only ones that don't have to go to WTC. Prior Service Navy, Air Force and in some cases Prior Army if there has been a long lapse in Service have to go to WTC, but Marines don't..My guess is they figure you have been through one of the toughest and longest boot camps...your good to go...

I think you will also find the same answer somewhere in the 55 pages listed here, at some time I suggested going through these pages

No, you don't have to go to WTC, u have not been out long enuff to be contanimated by society......hahhahaha. you will go to an in processing center closest to your duty station where u will be assigned. There you will be processed as a permanent party Soldier along with IET/WTC Soldiers(if you come here). All your uniform issues items will be given to you there. class 'A's also. no ribbons, or hash marks/service stripe. You will stay and in-process then be taken to the post welcome center to report to your unit. Ensure you get in your orders that you are authorized to drive your POV. and your household goods CAN be picked up before you leave. The Army will store them for you at your assigned duty station. That will happen IF you come to Fort Sill. Usually the other 4 IET processing places follow the same schedules we do. But as always.......I could be wrong(this is my disclaimer hehehhehehhehe)

WTC Questions Answered

Oops, sorry but you're wrong. Former Marines DO go through WTC. The OP's break in service is less than 3 years so WTC isn't required (exactly like any prior Army...as Ninjadrill stated). AF, Navy and CG are required regardless. I went through WTC with former Marines and am currently serving with former Marines-gone-Army that didn't attend WTC because of the short (less than 3 years) break in service.

Word up to the OP. When you in-process, you will probably have to wait a week or two before you get your basic issue, no biggy, just a paperwork thing. If you can afford it, as soon as you get your ID card, buy yourself a set of ACU's and a set of PT's. Learn the Soldier's Creed and more importanly, the NCO Creed. Read AR 670-1 on how to wear the Army uniform (even though the wear of the ACU has yet to be added). Learn the proper wear of the Army dress uniform (Class A's and B's) and placement of decorations and badges. Check out wwww.armystudyguide.com to get some references on things Army NCO's should know. Read FM 21-20 and check out the TRADOC Standardized Physical Training Guide(you will be expected to know how to conduct PT) and FM 3-21.5 Drill and Ceremonies (Army commands are different from MC commands for the same movements).

When you show up with your Army Sergeant stripes, it will be expected that you perform as an Army NCO. The better prepared you are the smoother the road you'll find ahead of you.

Yep it's three years!! MEPS almost didn't send me to WTC till they read more into the Regs. And that was witha 16yr break. I had already told him that WTC was in the cards. You don't have to go!

Semper-Fi Brother come on in and join the party.

Vis, good to see you're keeping the mentoring skills sharp, bro. Can't let the Grey Brigade down.

Big Grin It's in my blood brother!! Cool

Sorry I've been out of the loop. I'm still alive and kicking. This school is pretty intense, to say the least.

Understood. I'm getting ready to experience "intense." I do my APFT at the April Battle Assembly to see if I can hang with the kids at Jump School. Gotta pass the APFT at the 17-21 standard. No problems so far - but doo-doo does occur... Wink

Stay sharp and do us proud at AIT.

I just enlisted in the Army Reserve yesterday. I am a prior service Marine who has been out for 10 years. I was told I am not going to WTC. Honestly, I think it would be good for me, but if I don't have to go, that's fine too.

This happened to me November of last year. Showed up at MEPS to ship for WTC and they said that reg had changed for Army Reserve and National Guard and my 20 year break did not matter. Shipped directly AIT and graduated March 09
