Yeah, thats Federal Law unfortunately (FRA). Hercules1944 (Howard) is a former Milwaukee Road Locomotive Engineer. He is retired now though. I was just telling him about the MOS a few days ago. Afghanistan is going to need a railway system, both Pakistan and Iran are trying to build into the country center from their borders. Iran has crossed the border already from the Northwest, Pakistan is trying to build across to Herat. So chances are, your going to be sent there as soon as they figure out the development plan for the country via whatever development fund they are trying to put together. They both use British Railway Standards and I am sure the plan is to connect Iran and Pakistan by rail. |

Well, let me clear one thing up. That is not me in the cab of#156, although I throttled it many times. Lost my job in 1982 after the Milwaukee Road went bankrupt. Interesting concept though. Without the Railroad Battalions in WW11, what would have happened? You gotta get the goods to the front. If the Army is going full thottle now to build railroad infrastructue overseas now, that would be a great MOS to get into, for sure. Now, if the USA would just rebuild the railroad infrastructue... It bothers me sometimes that if someone actually invaded us, it's a deadlock. No practical way to move troops and supplies. |

Make sure you watch the accompanying video on Iraqi Railways, especially the railroad crossing scene.....holy crap (lol)!
U.S. Army gave them a good headstart with the train station opening and the track rebuilding though. ++http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/checkpointbaghdad/archive/2008/12/19/the-baghdad-commute.aspx Different news source and look at how much more positive this video is: ++http://www.truveo.com/Iraqi-pilgrims-brave-the-railways/id/2285829802 |

They just got new cars and some new Locomotives in 2007-2008, the pictures were in International Railway Gazette, the U.S. Army setup that contract as well. It wasn't a lot though and it was mostly used East Bloc stuff.
So I am not sure why in the interview the guy is stating they don't have any (maybe use of the term "New" is relative). They are also laying fibre optic cable along the ROW using it in much the same way as we do here. For where they were in 2003, they are recovering. Very slowly but recovering. |
