Basic Training

Hey folks. I am trying to get ready for WTC and had a few questions. I've read in other places that there is minimal PT in WTC. So, with that in mind I should be prepared to pass the APFT before I leave here so that it won't be an issue.

So, I have no problem with that but my question is then, how much PT is there in WTC? I know there are 3 ruck marches, but aside from that how hard should I expect to be pushed? Just want to know what to expect so I am prepared. Going into basic I was kinda clueless and I want to be prepared this time.

Also, is this another basic atmoshphere? Should I expect all the yelling and mind games crap? I mean, everyone there will be prior service right?

Thanks!

Be in as good of shape as possible. The PT won't get you ready for Ranger School or anything but it will assist very well in you passing the APFT.

To be honest it has basic training moments because the students act like they NEED it. They are all prior service but act like they need to do basic again! Not too many grown men like to be told what to do, especially the ones who have been out of the military for many years. So when they don't do what we say/ask, we have to tighten them up. Much of our time is trying to get everyone in the military state of mind. We are not trying to create robots by any means but we want stuff done when we say do it. Nothing different than what the army has always been.

The hardest part of the course is not the Drill Sergeants/cadre, training, weather, or any of that. It is the Soldiers to the left and right of you who will complain all the time, come up with anything to get out of something, and are always lazy. Mark my words on that one!

Thats just surprising to me. I'm expecting it to be hard. If it's easier than I thought, well then thats a bonus.

As far as being yelled at and stuff, I was Air Force, so I have ZERO knowledge of tactics, weapons, etc. And I want to be deployed. So I want to be prepared. So if I am being a knucklehead during training than by all means hammer me, cause I dont want to not know what I am doing when its all done with.

My biggest concern is the running. I am a crappy runner. Always have been. No matter the shape im in. Even at 180 when was playing rugby, I could play for hours, but tell me to run the track and it kills me. Not sure if it's mental or what but I just have breathing issues when it comes to straight running. So I am dreading the running.

I just don't want to wash out or be the weak link cause of running.

It's hard because it is VERY long days, at WSMR we went from 0350 to 2100 every day except Sunday and even then you only get about 4 hours personal time. We didn't do much "pt" but alot of marching. My advice is to be able to pass your pt test when you get there or you will be struggling. I passed my first one so didn't have to take the others but we had alot of people who had to take them all and even then had trouble passing. I found that it was good to do pushups and sit ups during the times that you are sitting around waiting to do things and during breaks from classes. Other than the long days it was pretty easy if you have the mindset that you want to be in the Army and are ready for the discipline.

Actually the PT program is rather good if your goal is to eat very healthy and lose weight. I lost at least 18 lbs and about 4 inches off my waist at WTC. I didnt do any excercise other than the built in PT and marching etc.

The key is to limit your calorie intake to less than 1200 calories per day. Dont use the stress of WTC as an excuse to gorge at the dfac. I posted my daily diet at every place I went to at WTC in the "who has to lose weight to get into WTC" thread on this forum. Its on the last page or 2 if you are interested.

In the month since I left ive only lost 3-4lbs and maybe a 1 more inch, using a ~1500 calorie diet. So much for AIT PT.../laugh
