Just wondering if a non-prior service college graduate with a BA in history and zero flight hours/no PPL has any chance of earning a Navigator/CSO slot with an ANG or AFR unit. I understand the degree should not matter if I can score well on the AFOQT, but are flight hours a big factor when units select Nav applicants?

Would there be any great benefit if I were to enlist in a unit first and submit a package at a later date?

Lastly, are ANG/AFR units in the need for Navs or are the positions limited and filled quickly?

Thanks guys. I am just hoping for some input so I can figure out which direction I should take my life. Thank you again!

I don't know much about Nav positions. I do know when we make selections for F-16 pilots at our unit that it definitely helps to be in the service to start with.(They meet the basic qualifications) I've seen people with no flighttime get selected!
The one thing i tell people that want to fly is; put in applications everywhere! Fly first and location is second.
One other thing; you may want to take a MEPS physical. 50% or more people don't pass for flight. I had a young man that had his heart set on flying F-16's; i had to burst his bubble when i saw his physical.
He enlisted 2 months later after more thought.
I don't feel that Nav requirements would be as tough. You'd have to ask. Maybe there are some pilot forums out there too.

The one shop stop for people looking for flying jobs in the guard and reserve is the forum on baseops.net. You can also find a job ad board.

Just curious, why don't you want to be a pilot?

I have never been the type of person who enjoys having my hands on the wheel, so to speak. I would rather be slumped over a map planning the routes and knowing exactly what should happen and where.

I do understand, however, that the career field is shrinking but pilots are going to also have their own problems with the demand for more UAVs.

Thank you for the advice! I will definitely look around for as many openings as possible. I have noticed that most of units accepting UNT applications are not within my area.
