I have heard that a Reservist could be denied transfer to another Reserve unit for several reasons. However, if the unit the Reservist is wanting to transfer to has a position open for them, or if the unit has an AFSC that the Reservist is qualified to switch to, what would be any other reasons the Reservist could be denied transferring (to another unit)?
There are many reasons, such as the current unit has a critical need for your skill set, you didn't pass your PT test, or the ever popular catch-all: "needs of the Air Force".
Just like on AD, just because you want to PCS, are eligible to PCS, and the base has an opening, it doesn't mean you will get it.
If you are denied a transfer, I would certainly demand I the commander give me the denial in writing, with the reason for the denial. If the commander won't do that, I would get in contact with the Wing IG.
Reserve or Guard???? I have not heard of a Reserve member being denied a transfer. Guard...Sure as you are not a member of the "National" guard but of the "State" you joined. The Reserve is the Reserve.....I have never had a person have a problem.....HUNDREDS of folks that I have dealt with transfered in the Reserve....People move....spouses get PCS'd....
Sure there are reasons as MBWILLIS stated, and there all valid, but when it comes right down to it.....that would be stupid for us to tell you you cant leave....cause what are you gonna do....your gonna leave......separate.....and rejoin there.
I would not worry about it....would be a rare thing and there would be other circumstances, I am sure.
Good luck with that...and remember, that is what your 1st Shirt if for.
Late response, but for the interest and benefit of others...
You began your posting with "I have heard..." implying that this has not happened to you. If you are an undesirable member of a unit, the commander would jump at the chance to transfer you. The only valid reason I could come up with is that losing one person would effect their unit's C-rating, but I am implying that the person wanting to leave does not have a disciplinary problem within the unit AND holds a hard-to-fill position.
As far as the IG comment from another person on this board, DON'T do it. It is NOT a valid IG complaint and the IG will send you back to your unit and you will be warned by leadership to utilize your chain of command first. People who don't follow the chain of command do not get additional responsibility and the extra stripe to sew on.
Second, no one demands their commander to do anything as the same poster I mentioned above says to do. You schedule time with the commander and ask if there is a specific reason why the transfer was not approved. They WILL tell you. If they say it is because they want to make your life hell, then politely tell the commander that you would like to approach the IG to get a more fair outcome to your situation. The commander cannot block you and can seriously hurt their career by even trying to block you (it is unheard of). When you open an IG complaint at your wing, the numbered Air Force Commander also is informed of the complaint.
