Just wanted to get some input from those who have done it before(or those who help people do it).
I became eligible for Palace Chase 3 months ago and I'm about ready to get the process rolling. I have been in contact with a reserve unit who is very interested. I am going to send them a "application packet" of sorts(EPRs etc.) and I should be good to go with them. I know I need to sit down with the ISR here, and I'm sure he will point me in the right direction. A few questions- How do I go about this with my current unit? Is this something I need to sit down with my CC about before I talk to the ISR? My supervisor and superintendent both know this is what I wanted to do from the first day I arrived. I'm just trying to get a good time line of who I need to talk to/go through in order not to make anyone mad. I know it will a great help if the CC backs me on this so I don't want to step on anyones toes. This is also a flying squadron so the chances of me being able to get my supervisor, superintendent, first shirt and CC in the same room at the same time is next to nothing. Secondly, I've gotten mixed feedback about my GI Bill. Do I need to serve 30 months in order to get the full benefit? Is that 30 months from the time of the application? If I go on active orders immediately with the reserves for 3/4 months does that count towards that time? I basically have ~26 months TIS right now, and would be willing to wait until 30 months if it meant keeping my full GI Bill. Thanks, noleguy |

Your CC has nothing to do really with your approval/disapproval for PC. It's done at the AFPC level.
It's a good idea to keep everyone in the loop though. It's not a good idea to burn bridges. The old GI Bill was 30 months for coverage. That being said you need to do the research on the new GI Bill. The way i interpret it is that you will need 36 months of AD to be eligible. I'm not the authority on this by any means; but, i have talked to a lot of people and it appears that is the way it will go. Your current GI Bill will go away and will be replaced by the new gi bill. Going on AD (Title 10) orders (AF Reserves) should help i believe. We run these scenarios every week and it's hard to get concrete answers. Like i said before; even though i breath this stuff everyday, i'm no authority. It's hard to pin down any hard answers. Full implementation is Aug '09 for the new bill. Make sure you get your answers in print! We employ an NCO to take care of this issue full-time and he is even unclear on it! On top of that he was #1 in the nation last year. What's that tell you. What it boils down to is that you are better off doing 36 months to get the new GI Bill. It's better to be safe than sorry!!! |

Go here for the new GI Bill. Found this today. I stand corrected.

Well I talked to our ISR today and the VA. From what I've gathered I can use active duty time in the reserves towards my 36 months. And one of the most interesting things I've found out(I say this just in case someone in my same situation reads this), you can request what date of separation you would like. One thing I was a bit nervous about was getting a phone call and them saying "you've been approved, start out processing". The recruiter was a tremendous help... no surprise there.

Would you please clarify? I've read the link the can't seem to find anything other than unless you got medically discharged or serving 36 months... To my understanding, and I could be wrong, there are FOUR status's you could palace chase into. Technician/GS, Reservist, Traditional Guardsmen or AGR. If you palace chase before 36 months to any of those four status's, will you still receive full benefits? Thanks! |
