Apparently I'll enlist as either an E1 or E2, but my recruiter said that during my DEP time I can come in to his office and take something like 13 tests on the computer, and if I pass them all, and then pass the APFT, I can be bumped up to E3 before I ship out to Basic. Is this true? How exactly does it work?
I just filled out my paperwork yesterday and go to MEPS on Monday. What I have to do to make PFC before basic sounds like the same thing for you. What I have to do is around 4 hours of online stuff/courses, 50 push ups, 50 situps, 2 miles in 15:30.
I was told after I pass MEPS and all that I will be given the info on what to do and when to do it. All you have to do is ask them about it.
I just got back from basic and ait and I enlisted as an E3 when I went to MEPS. Doing the future soldiers training online and printing out the certificates and passing the APFT will rank you up one time, and if you have college credits like me you can rank up a second time, or get a friend to enlist with you and that will rank you up as well. There are other ways to get advanced rank before you leave but those are the easiest ways. Most soldiers in basic and ait did the future soldiers training online and passed the APFT so I would highly recommend doing it.
Sounds great! Thanks for the replays guys. Is the Future Soldier thing something I need to get written into my contract? Or is it just something I trust my recruiter on? Or is there some kind of paperwork I need to ask for at MEPS, or what? How do I make sure I get to do it?
After I get my rank bumped up after passing all the tests, how does it become official? Like, say I sign a contract at MEPS to enlist as an E1, and then I come home, pass all the Future Solider tests and the APFT, how and at what point does my bump up to an E2 become official? How can the Army prove to me they bumped me up?

The rank for completing task list thing does not have to be in your contract since it is in the Army Enlistment Regulations (located at the top of the forums via the link below).
Since it is in the regulations your Recruiter has full descretion / authority to enter you in ranks from E1 to E4 if you meet the conditions that are outlined in the regulations.
The rank is official as soon as your Recruiter issues you a new enlistment contract OR an addendum to the contract with the rank typed on it. So all he/she needs to do is type it in on a few forms.
Your not really in the Army until you swear in the second time at the MEPS on ship date. That is the point where your correct rank had better be on your contract. Even if it is not the Army provides a means of redress called the Army Board for Correction of Military Records (ABCMR for short). Their job is to take hand typed appeals from Soldiers who were promised rank per regulations (see link above) and they met their end of the deal but the MEPS screwed up on ship date. The link for the ABCMR is below:
ABCMR process takes some time and if you need to use it you should not initiate it until you get to a assignment duty station where you'll be for at least a year.
My recruiter is telling me that I'll have to enlist as an E1 (if I cant get that final half credit by the time we go to MEPS) but that because I am getting my friend to join, I'll be bumped up to E2. And then, through the Future Soldier program, I can bump up to an E3 before I ship to Basic.
My question is, if my friend enlists when I do, and because I got him to I'll be getting the bump up in rank, why wont my contract reflect this? Why wont I just sign as an E2 right then and there?

What happens if your friend decides the Army is not for him and leaves the DEP prior to shipping out (which happens like 60-70% of the time). You really didn't get him to join the Army then, did you? Yet you keep the rank?
See how that rule can be abused? That's why they wait to adjust your contract.
BTW, that program in the 1980s was jokingly called the "F" your buddy program by Recruiters.
Because the majority of the applicants have their buddy bail out at the last min or near the last min and they are stuck with the Army contract and never get the rank. You'll be one of the lucky few if your friend sticks it out and actually does enlist with you.
Then do you think I should be adamant with my recruiter about waiting to go to MEPS until I get the credits I need thus allowing me to get E2 written into my contract? At the soonest, I'll have it by the end of October. At the latest, the end of December. What say you?
