A few months ago I began the process for Active Army OCS enlistment with much excitement. After waiting 42 days to get assigned a MEPS physical date I went to see my recruiter and demanded to know what the delay was. My recruiter (and his superior) said that MEPS would not sign off on my packet because I had a D.U.I. arrest in 2004 and that I was not qualified to continue based on this. They claimed to get confirmation of this from the Battalion Commander. Right after leaving that office I drove over to the National Guard office and started the process with them, determined to be an Officer. They told me that, not only would I be fine, but I didn't even need a waiver for the D.U.I..

I'm leaving for MEPS in a few days to sign with the Nevada National Guard to be an Officer but I really want to be full-time. Additionally, I would rather see deployment and be "in the zone" than to be a "Weekend Warrior." Was my Army recruiter just being lazy or is this really what I have to settle for?

Just to give you some background; at the age of 27 I have avoided having kids or even getting serious with someone so I can devote my full attention to the military. My ASVAB was 76 and my AFQT was 112. I have a B.A. in Criminal Justice and currently do private security. I'm 5'11", 175lbs and work out almost everyday. No medical conditions (not even allergies).

Ya know, I've read about people joining the Guard and then going active duty later in their career. I dont know if Officers can do that, but you can probably give it a shot. Dont feel like your "settling" for the Guard. Serving in the Guard is just as honorable as the Active duty component. Your just doing it in a different capacity in Your community. Well, thats at least my perspective of it.

I just got my degree. Did you notice the arrest date in my explanation? The point is that everyone makes mistakes. The incident is isolated and does not reflect an overall trend.

I didn't say he is a "dumb azz." The people of this country trusted him enough to put him in his seat. Just making a point that if he can be trusted to be in charge of a country with such an "unforgivable" act then why should I be denied the opportunity to be entrusted with the care of a group of soldiers for the same act.

That's my point.
He has gotten Soldiers killed unnecessarily.
Maybe he should have been vetted more.

I fear that my comment on the President may have taken this in a completely different direction.

You came here for help then opened your mouth like you did. Its up to you to make sure you steer it back on course. Only your actions and the way you respond to the rest of the posts will be able to do that.

A few things...

You're going to require a moral waiver for the NG as well if you want to attend OCS.

You can't easily switch between the NG to AD as an officer.

Before you sign, gotto www.armyocs.com and repost your question about AD. It may the hang up is at the battalion level and changing battalions my be the trick.

1. Look into Active First Enlistment, I don't know if it goes to Officers as well, but check it out...

2. ARNG right nwo have higher deployment rates because of the strain on combat units in Iraq and A-Stan...

ARNGhopeful, I'm beginning to think you're a recruiter, seriously. Anyway... people come here to make their own decisions. No one is supposed to sway them in any direction. This forum was not meant for soliciting.

Actually recruiters are encouraged to post here as they have all the info on the recruitment process.

I never said they can't post... but they're not supposed to coerce someone into joining their particular service. This NG poster is posting in other threads with the exact same post, telling people to join active first.

FYI: The poster asked about going active duty.

Besides if ARNGhopeful believes his/her advice is the best way to go for the person, what would you have them do; lie as not to offend anyone?

My understanding from experience is that if you volunteer for a deployment via the Guard and while on active duty you request regular active duty, in other words you will not return to the NG upon deployment recovery, it is pretty simple to trans to the AR.
