Basic Training |
Hello Everyone, I was have been thinking for a while about joining the Military. The problem is that according to the weight limits for Army standards at 5'7-5'8 i need to be I think 180lbs. I havent weighted that since my 8th grade year in '99. Im currently 215 lbs I have always been the stocky muscular type person. I read that you can get a waiver if your over weight if they do a BMI to measure your body fat has anyone haft to do this? Right now only after 2 months of training. I could do the max number of push ups and situps in 2 minutes to score the 100% and running probably atleast 85% to DEP. So I was wondering if there would be a good chance i could DEP?
--Sorry for the long post I have more that I could post but I'll save everyone the time and agony from reading the reason I'd like to join the Army now instead of the USMC. |

If your just muscular it won't be an issue, if it's flab and you bust tape you'll need to lose that extra weight. I'm always over my weight but I don't bust tape. Just stocky. Good luck.

Can you pass the APFT? That is the most important thing really. Not everyone who looks fat is out of shape.

Yes Salty, I defintly have the push ups and situp for sure, Push ups i could probably do atleast 60+ in 2 minutes and the crunches/situps i can do atleast 50+ on them and i usually run the 1 mile in about 6 to 7 minutes. I was considering joining the Marines, but after I met with the recruiter here he kinda ****ed me off after talking to him on many occasions he can never remember my name or anything about me, and all the little immature kids really p*** me off. One more question I know to be a grunt in the marines 03xx it is very hard to get that mos, how hard is it in the Army? Id love to join and serve my country like my uncles, my step-grandfather he was in ww2 im not real sure what unit he was in but he was in Africa Italy and Europe and was on his way to get ready for japan when we dropped the bombs on Japan. Also there is a Fort Chaffee in Arkansas named after my step fathers great grandfather or something like that. Sorry for the long post im just really excited!

If you refuse to accept anyhting else you'll get it...if you cave you won't. Make sense? Recruiter have a job to do, and they are not gonna send you a Christmas card next year.
Try to max that PT test..11B is no joke, motivation is good so use it and don't let it turn into daydreaming. |

Can I make a suggestion here since sooner or later your going to tick off SaltyFish with the questions. 1. Click on the FIND button and start entering keyword text and doing searches for what your looking for here as well as the Infantry Forum. Don't post your questions in the Infantry Forum as they should be posted here for future reference of the trainees that follow you. 2. gruntpain1775 is a Active Duty Infantryman and is also a Mod here if you have any questions you can think of that have not already been answered.....he answered the PT question earlier though either here or the Infantry forum. A regular Army Infantry Company runs 6-7 miles Mon-Fri at a 8 min pace. At least they did in the 1980's. They never always do the same thing everywhere for the PT run. At 2AD in the 1980's you ran with a Flak vest on for example. That constricted your chest so if you had to take deep breaths it felt like you were suffocating (take note people with asthma that want a waiver). They can add to requirements to make PT more challenging and it does happen. So just meeting requirements is never a good strategy. Another thing to remember is they do the PT run after 40-45 min of intensive warmup exercises that will pre-exhaust you, so you should do the same and not just train for the PT test. Also on swimming...not a requirement but if I did not know how to swim I would be dead right now.....they no longer do amphibious operations I was told. So I guess your safe there. However, in Iraq recently, the 187th Infantry regiment is doing patrols on the Euphrates river in boats. They had to pass a swim test and boating ops test given by the Coast Guard to get that duty. So while swimming is not really a requirement, it's best you know how to swim. That question was asked before as well. So start using the FIND button a little more. |
