FRG's are for everyone(well, family-wise) in a soldier's life! Smile Wife, husband, father, mother, aunts&uncles, and cousins too. If you want to be involved, go for it! It's a wonderful way to connect with other families in your son's unit---just have him put your name on the Contact List, and the FRG will be in touch.
If you don't see or meet the FRG Leader at the Pre-deployment meeting that they have, get the name from your son. Smile

It can depend on the CO of the command, sometimes they will limit the FRG's to only spouses, but other's will allow it to also include gf, bf and parents. Have your son check with the FRG Chairperson to find out, if it is allowed then have him put your information on the list to be contacted.

Any FRG that I have belonged to allowed parents, spouses, gf, bf, retired military, heck, even teenage children and friends of the unit.

I guess it does depend on the unit.

I have been involved in an FRG that was spouses-only. Sometimes, they just don't want that info floating around to every one and there brother (no pun intended).

I've also had one where GFs/fiances were welcomed. i don't know about parents because no one's parents live in the area to make the meetings.

Most FRGs will allow parents in, especially in the case of a single military member. Have your son check with the FRG and get you the contact information.

My FRG will include spouses but will include fiances, girlfriends, and family as long as the soldier requests they are contacted through the FRG. Usually this has to be approved by the commander before they are contacted!

I have the same question - my 21 yo son is single and just deployed (he is USAF) to the desert and no one at all has communicated with me. My son swears my name and number is on "everything" whatever that means - he had not heard of FRGs. His home base was overseas so I don't know if that made a difference but it would be nice to be included.

The Air Force does not have FRGs. They do have some kind of family group but it is not the same name so that is probably why he hasn't heard of it. He probably means that your name is on all the stuff to be contacted in case of an emergency.

Whatever they are called it would have been nice to be included - his "group" (I know that isn't the right name for it) was only 40 in number leaving from the base so it wasn't that big. I tried to bug him about finding out about family groups before he left but he was so busy with his own checklist of duties.

Is it out of line for ME to contact his base to ask

I, personally, would not call, but some people might say to go ahead. But really, it should be your son. It shouldn't be difficult for him to find out who to contact and give him/her your info. If you call, and do happen to get a hold of the "group" leader-she is not supposed to give you any info without his permission anyway. I know this doesn't help you much- wish I could help you out!

Technically, you will not be allowed to receive ANY information unless your son has given written permission that it's okay.

I don't know if this helps but I found this link on the AF website about keeping in touch.

we do not allow outside links, especially unofficial ones or ones that would compete with our own message boards.

Of course, the amount of time you want to keep in touch and the amount of time your airperson wants/ has time to keep in touch may vary depending on their location.

When I searched for 'family' and 'family readiness group' nothing comes up.
