Does anyone have good instructions for making a homecoming lei for a ship? A list of materials needed would be great also. None of us have ever made a lei before and it is difficult to find instructions online for this. If anyone has any information that could help us it would be greatly appreciated.

oh hell its been so long..

I think we used plastic grocery bags...I do know it was wickedly expensive trying to find solid Red and blue bags.

we just strung them on handling lines from another ship.

A real lei for a person or a plastic one for the ship itself? For the ship it would be huge and would take one heck of a lot of plastic bags (if you want it to last for any period of time) or crepe paper (to last for a shorter period of time and don't get it wet). You might try Michaels or something like that (maybe a party store) to see if they have big paper flowers at a reasonable price.

If the lei is for people as they come off the ship, you only need a needle, thread (the size you would use for needlepoint) and a lot of flowers.

hi,
i was the president of our frg last deployment and we made a lei from scratch. if you go to your local ffsc they will put you on a list for supplies for a lei but more than likely the larger ships get priority.

some supplies are
large trash bags (red, white and blue)

rubber bands

ribbon (optional)

cardboard (to seperate the colors) cut into circles big enought to hold the bags in place.

rope (the ships needs to measure the length of the front of the ship where it will lay)

get the bags and cut the bottom and a little of the tops of.
fan them like your making a paper flower and once you have folded the bags like a fan fold again in half and tie the end with a rubber band leaving a little hole for the rope and then fan out the top. continue until you get all the colors done as you do all the colors you can start putting them on the rope but you have to measure the right amout of space per color in order to get the even amount in each space per color. oh once you finish one full color then put the cirlce cardboard and tie a not so the cardbaord wont move and then start the other color and repeat.
