I'm not sure where to turn for help. I'm the mom of a soldier deploying soon, for his second tour. I live about a mile from post, in a wheelchair, and live alone. Need communication and new friends. A ride to get groceries once a week is my first goal. How do I get started?

Start with the local United Way or even Meals on Wheels. There definitely should be somebody at United Way that can help out and there probably is somebody at Meals on Wheels that will know who to contact.

Another option is your local church to see if anyone there can help you out. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are usually looking for community service opportunities and the older ones (old enough to drive) may be willing to drive you.

In the town where I live there is actually a service that will pick you up from your home and take you to the store. They then come back to take you home when you are done. I don't think they charge anything. Again, United Way should know about a program like that.
