memorial day is a day to dwell on the soldiers of our nation that have served in all the services thru out the ages.living and dead and be thankful that we are free because of their dedication to duty of keeping our country safe from invasion. from terrorist, demagogic fanatics.dictators with delusions of grandeur. but also to be enjoyed be all, children playing, picnics, strolls, sight seeing, appreciating a life of freedom, entertainment.and dwelling on those that have given their lives in service of their country so that we may free. may god bless them all.
It is time to do away with all the phony stuff that goes with our Memorial day observance. No more changing the date to make a 3 day holiday...No more commercialzing the week end ...no more drunken parties ..It,s time to just do what it was created for...HONORING our veterans
I remember when it was called Decoration Day. It was a time of reflection and honoring those that gave all for this great country. I fly my flag proudly and in my neighborhood most do as well (most of us are either active or retired military). Memorial Day is only what one makes it to be. Some need the commercialization but those that have defended America know why it is so important to honor those that have gone before. Thank You Warriors for your Sacrifice, may we live up to the standards you have set. God Bless the USA and all who defend her!!!
I so glad that someone did a story about taking back Mermorial Day finally, so many americans have forget what this day really stands for (along with the other holidays) and see another day of partying. This day about for all those who died in every single war who fight for this nation and taking the time to remember their sacrifice.
Our uneducated citizens are no longer taught American Government/Civics nor Patriotism in our schools. They have to be reminded to stand when the flag passes because our liberal court system says its ok to burn it as a freedom of speech. They have all forgotten that it is a symbol of all the good in this nation- something we the warriors have fought under and will all one day be buried under. Yes, we need to take back Memorial Day and our schools and our nation! We need to teach the difference between rights and priviledges- lawyers & courts do not give nor protect rights- it is us the warriors and our departed comrades who defend and if necessary die to protect these rights. Our children must be taught good from evil, Patriotism, love of country, respect for all of mankind and hate for tyranny. Then we can take back our holiday for our comrades.
I grew up in the Netherlands where at our 'rememberance day', those who died in the war (WW2) were honoured by having a national silence for 5 minutes starting at 8pm. On tv, they'd show the silent procession on some military cemetary (sorry, don't remember the name)where one soldier would play Taps (I believe that's the name of it) for those 5 minutes and wreaths would be laid at the tomb of the unknown soldier. At the same time, it being the Netherlands, church bells would ring for those 5 minutes and people would stay home or at least, not go out on the street during those 5 minutes. I remember being a teenager and someone DROVE his car during that time and I was thinking how disrespectful that was. How can you not wait 5 minutes?! Anyhow, here you don't have churches with church bells to call (or wake up!!) the flock on sundays, but I think it would be nice to have a national 5 minutes of silence. Unfortunately, the culture of commercialism (courtesy of America) has crept up in Holland as well and there's no way boycott or try to make stores close for the day. However, perhaps calling for a five minutes time that would be in tandem for all the time zones, perhaps that would get people to step in the right direction. Of course, one would still need to figure out what to do in lieu of the church bells. Perhaps a local gathering point in each city where someone could play taps. Just a thought, Ingrid,
