So, you feel that you were impacted in the service by tramatic military events.... fearing for your life, etc? Do you have the PTSD symptoms? Have you studied the VA rating criteria?

OK. Now, how to document the problem.... my opinion, only.

1) do it yourself.
2) get copies of your SMR and service records (DD-214, etc).... but, not later, now
3) find a private Forensic Psychiatrist that specializes in PTSD and disability evaluations/management, and in your city, or closeby. They are there. HOW:
a. access a good private health insurance company's web site and do a Search on #3, of above. For example:

Insurance

If you cannot find a Forensic Psychiatrist, call one in your location (a Psychiatrist's office). Ask them for a Psychiatrist that does what you are looking for (see above).

Insurance2

b. If you don't have private health insurance, call them for an appointment, but findout how much it will cost you. Typically, it will be about $500 for an Independant Medical Opinion/Psychiatric Evaluation. Tell them its for 1) PTSD treatment (therapy), and 2) a disability evaluation/management. Treatment (therapy) will most likely be in +addition to the $500.

4) be prepared to provide your military documentation to your new doctor.

5) IMPORTANT: when you are in therapy, open-up to your doctor, don't be in denial. Talk to your doctor about how you are feeling and how it is negatively impacting your social and industrial life. Be honest, but not in denial.

6) DON'T give up. Its a long hard road and getting longer and harder. Perserviere.

GOOD LUCK.

Every veteran filing a claim, needs to do their own documentation. However I also feel they need a good VSO to assist them. All of those who file PTSD claims, or chemical exposure claims with me are required to sign SF-180 for me to order their military, or naval services records. In many cases, veterans have brought in copies of their service records with sheets missing, as well as altered. VA will not accept them either.
When a veterans NPRC records are sent to me directly, they can then be attested as a true copy. VA will accept only the DD 214 certified by me, or any accredited VSO who has completed the required training.
When a veteran orders their own records, it takes six months before NPRC can honor another request. I personally want to see the certified NPRC copy.

I will cast no stones!
