i was told by the captain at home to ask the question. We are pcs'ing right now and she heard from a coastie wife, who heard from her husband, that the gas mileage rate was going to raise july 1st. i don't think its true, can anyone confirm i'm right?
1) MALT is MONETARY ALLOWANCE in liue of Travel. It is not mileage or gas mileage nor meant to pay for gas.
2) Depending on what you mean by 'right now.' If you started traveling more than two days ago, then you are not going to make the Capt happy. The new rates authorized by the IRS took affect July 1. I don't have it in front of me, but at best it applies only to travel that actually happened Jul 1st or later, slight chance might only apply to travel started after Jul 1st.

Unless things have changed, the rates will be based on the effective date of orders. This is date of reporting less travel and proceed time. So, if you are in a leave status right now, you still may be reimbursed for the new rate when you file your travel claim.
Yes it is true. Mileage for travel for a PCS move was raised from $0.19 to $0.27 per mile as of 1 July 2008. This is available on the JFTR website... and I had my PCS orders amended today to reflect the new rate.
Militia; The folks above and you are a little confused. The current rate for MILEAGE is $0.505. The current Monetary Allowance in Liue of Travel for PCS moves is determined by the distance of the move times $0.27. The first one is paid to compensate expenses of driving and is normally for local or TAD/TDY travel. The second one is to provide what the gov't would have had to pay to transport the member. Both of these are based, in part, on what the IRS allows employers to compensate employees w/o tax consequences.
It is true. However, you MUST start your travel ON OR AFTER 1 July in order to receive the new rate. If you left your previous unit prior to 1 July, then you will receive the $.19/mile for all of the miles you traveled.
... you MUST start your travel ON OR AFTER 1 July ... If you left your previous unit prior to 1 July, then you will receive the $.19/mile ...
Your statement could be misleading. Your rate is based on the effective date of orders. If you left your unit on leave prior to 1 July but your travel and proceed time doesn't start until after 1 July, you are entitled to new rate.
To expand on Paul's comment, if you find yourself close, TALK TO A SMART YN (I wish I had one of those on my 205) before reporting. Travel and Proceed days are the days closest to your REPORTING PCS date. (only 90% sure of that, so again, talk to a YN). This could mean that reporting on Tuesday could mean you 'left' on the 30th and reporting on Wednesday could mean you 'left' on the 1st and were on leave on the 30th.
For a doctors appointment I had in Palo Alto yesterday, the VA gave me $30.06...Not sure what the rate was...Approx 90 miles each way...Trip cost me $50.00, so the $30 bucks helped...
