A bad day on the water beats a good day at the office. |
From a story available at the WTOP.com web site:
"Petty Officer Lavelas Luckey ran past several on-lookers at the scene of a fiery four-vehicle crash, reached into a burning car and saved a 5-year-old child." This happened this morning in Millersville, MD, as he was on his way to Curtis Bay. |

Self preservation is a strong human reaction. Only when the crap hits the fun will you know if you got what it takes to do something heroic like this Petty Officer did. |

I'll echo the BZ(job well done) to him, job well done(BZ)!
It's the nature of the beast for some to be on-lookers and other to be responders. For most of us in the CG, it is in our nature to be the latter. |

militia1,
Many of us here, don't identify with the onlookers because we are/were in the Coast Guard/Military. We look at things differently, we do things that many would never do. We do things without stopping to think of the overwhelming dangers that cause others to pause or not act at all. We've been trained to do things differently. Part of that might be the reason we joined the Coast Guard/Military in the first place. Petty Officer Lavelas Luckey was tested today and passed with flying colors. Well Done. |

While some have the instinct to run from the fire, others have the instinct to run to it. Good job!!! Don |

Not an easy thing to do, diving into a burning vehicle to save another. Those of us that have been faced with similar circumstances can relate to this selfless act that saved another life. Way to go Coastie. My hat is off to you.

Pic at left was taken by an Anne Arundel County Police Officer and posted along with the story on WTOP.com. It shows the commercial trash truck and the car which both caught fire in the accident. Great courage and action on the part of P.O. Luckey. Nice positive posts of encouragement for him, too. A quote from the story, from WTOP.com, says it was a tragic accident that "could have been much more tragic" if not for P.O. Luckey's "heroic" actions. Anne Arundel County Fire Chief John Robert Ray was quoted as saying that USCG P.O. Luckey's action was, "Absolutely heroic." The county Fire Chief was further quoted as saying, "The Coast Guard motto Semper Paratus was demonstrated in the clearest terms today by an individual who placed himself is extreme danger to save a life." "http://www.wtop.com/?nid=25&sid=1616229" _______________________ I expect that the CG will formally recognize P.O. Luckey's heroism with the appropriate Life Saving Medal, as well. Hand salute to P.O. Luckey. |

PO Luckey is da man!! Great Job. As to the post about all the on lookers, well it's a crazy world we live in these days and I have heard some things on the news that just blow my mind. A person who was saved from a burning car is sueing the Hero that rescued her, she's claiming she was injured by the person who pulled her OUT OF A BURNING CAR!! To top it all off, the person that saved her, was a friend. So lets get this straight, she was saved by her friend from a burning car = lawsuit. Maybe that's why there's so many on lookers these days. Other than that.... PO Luckey I'd like to buy you a beer

Sadly, P.O. Luckey does not meet the eligibility requirements for the Lifesaving Medals. However, that does not diminish his heroism. Great job!!! Salute! |

On the local news here in the DC area, he was shown speaking of the accident emotionally of how after fumbling with the seatbelt, he went to ripping the car seat from the car to get the little girl out. A police officer was there to attempt to get her mother out bud sadly the mother did not survive. In the story, it was stated that PO Luckey has been in a similar position twice before, pulling injured drivers from mangled vehicles.

Absolutely! Wouldn't it be great if there was a big ceremony when he got it? In these troubled times a real life HERO is exactly what we need; and a Coastie to boot!!! |
