Wray-
Put another way- I think your comment would have been much better directed at one of the anonymous rabble rousers who are just here to start trouble. Great time to bring up your opinion on anonymous posters- I may disagree with you, but it is a valid point to make when an anonymous poster signs up, does a drive by shooting, then disappears. I think it says a lot about LCDR Smith when a crewmember has such heartfelt words and specifics on why he liked the CO. The comment was kind of a . . . buzzkill. Not the best term but it comes to mind. In this case, I think the BM1 didn't deserve the shot. Some folks (as you point out) are begging for it. |

Jeff--that is why you are seeing such heartfelt praise for the LCDR. He was the epitome of a CO. I was amazed to hear that he had been relieved. The true reasons will only be known by the D9 Commander and LCDR Smith. I guess the rest of us will just have to wonder. Mike |

Wray-- In my opinion, you may have had your engines at overspeed on this one. Why not let the guy post what he wants, where he wants, in a manner that is allowed by this forum, without having to worry that he's going to offend someONE not by the nature of his message, but how he chose to convey it? I think it was a great post, by a Stand-up guy who means what he said. No credibility loss because he doesn't have a profile posted. Just my opinion. LCDR Smith,
I am writing this on this discussion board vice sending you a personal email because I don't think I am alone in my thinking. You are, without a doubt, the finest Officer I have ever sailed with. Your wealth of knowledge was unmatched. Even more impressive, is the way you are able to share your knowledge and teach sometimes difficult evolutions without making the pupil feel stupid. The lessons I learned from you some ten + years ago, are still very much imbedded in my leadership style. Because of you, many servicemembers have better supervisors for having served with you. I wish you luck in your next assignment. V/r Tim |

With these posts of support, I really have to wonder what happened here. Seems like the guy was really well respected. Its nice to read all of these. T |

In the latest Navy Times, which I got today, there was an article about this.. I don't have it here, but it did say the LCDR had done nothing wrong, & there was no investigation being conducted. That, along with the comments posted here from crew members says volumes to me.....
I do not know LCDR Smith, but I wish him well in the future. Wray.. |

As per Wray - "LCDR had done nothing wrong", then I go back to my original post. Why on earth did this story get printed in the first place. It seems to be a matter between the District Commander and the LCDR. The only other people who had a need to know would have been the crew.

Ted, right on.... if the LCDR had some personal issues that needed to be taken care of, or what-ever (as the girls/kids say these days) why not just arrange or schedule an early relief... As I recall he had been the CO for a few years.... It appears someone was too hasty, and why they called this a RFC is beyond me...
It appears the days of simply " taking care of business" in the simplest manner are gone. Maybe the RADM felt it was necessary to do it this way to cover his A$$... who knows... Wray... |

Wray, I think you're right. It has the aroma of CYA.

10 day suspension. TOS Section 6i. -1110 (7/1/2009) |
This could have been handled as a simple transfer and there wouldn't have been a question! Why the CG decided to handle this in the manner it was indicates a lack of "political correctness" and tact.
LCDR Smith, although I don't know you, I wish you all of the best and smooth sailing in whatever you decide to do! |

Here you go again.
Portsmouth, Va. - The commanding officer of a Charleston, S.C.-based Coast Guard cutter was temporarily relieved of command Tuesday by Vice Adm. Robert J. Papp, Jr., commander of the Coast Guard's Atlantic Area here. Papp cited loss of confidence in the ability to provide appropriate and adequate leadership as the reason for the temporary relief of Capt. Mike B. Christian from the 378-foot high endurance cutter Gallatin. " piersystem . com/go/doc/651/258497/" This message has been edited. Last edited by: Mastersmate, |

Ive known VADM Papp for many years. Hes an operator and i have seen him stand up for his people in difficult situations. I dont have a clue what is behind this action but i would trust his judgement for whatever happens.
Former CO sends. |

Not to sidebar the thread but it does raise my eyebrows somewhat why this latest temporarily relief of a major cutter CO warrants a formal press release, yet the recent relief (and thus far unreported outside the CG organization) of a Sector Commander did not.
A WHEC and a Sector are the same echelon level of Command, albeit for different functional elements. Thus, one cannot really say the rationale of a public press release for a cutter CO, but not for a Sector Commander is due to the concept of "different spanks for different ranks" as both were COs in the grade of CAPT/O6. Perhaps, "different pokes for different folks" is a more apt metaphor. For CAPT Wilkenson: I echo your sentiments and respect for VADM Papp. Respectfully, Surface Force No good deed goes unpunished. |

Surface Force, I did not see this one... was it on Fredsplace? I agree, it does seem strange and unequal in media importance. Can you shed more light on this one? Thanks, Wray... |

It hasn't been reported via press release, despite having happened several weeks ago now. PM sent. No good deed goes unpunished. |
